Rain or shine gardeners from around Puget Sound gather to exchange and share plants, seeds, ideas and enthusiasm with others. No Sales. Just trades or freebies, please.

The Green Elephant is a thrice-a-year plant exchange; first Saturday in March, first Saturday in November. And a winter seed sowing event in January. It is hosted in North Redmond, Washington, at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross; The site offers parking, covered areas, indoor facilities, kitchen, lots of lawn, and playground. ItÂs five minutes from I-405 and I-520.

Tailgating EncouragedÂ The format for the trade is like a tailgate party. You just pull into the parking lot and open up your trunk to display your treasures. Traders exchange expert gardening information as well as plant materials. In two hours all the deals are sealed.

Free StuffÂ Many gardeners generously share plants

from the abundance of their gardens--An excellent way to begin your garden.Â

There is always a pile of plants free for the taking at the swap.

In pots or bare root.Â The Green Elephant is convenient for trading bare root plants. Simply dig and divide perennials bare root to trade. They are dormant and can be transplanted with no shock.

What if I have nothing to bring to the trade?

The swap is a great place to start your garden. Many traders love to help new gardeners get started. Come and ask questions, get advice, schmooze a little and youÂll walk away with some goodies. Bring some homemade cookies; gardeners are a pushover for food.

Yes I am out in the garden digging and dividing already. I can't seem to give it away fast enough.

Hi All. Sorry I've been away for awhile. -Family passings & such. Winter has effectively devastated my garden, so, being the optimist that I am, I went to the NW Flower/Garden show twice this past week to get my motivation up. I work March 7th, so wont be able to attend the Green Elephant. HOWEVER, I do have a few things that I would like to put out as offerings to people for trades, if interested, and we can swap on a day other than 3/7.

Wanteds:
I'm still going for tropicaleze theme, with focus on glaucous leaf & black leaf items, or chartreuse. or verigated., flowers that pop in my yard are white, or green.
Bananas (would take pups) Brugsmansias (Lost all my biggies), Calla lilies, Cannas, Colocasias, iris, daylilies, black or gold raspberry canes, huckleberries, ferns. Unfortunately, all of my verigated iris has been lost. I gave alot of it out a couple of years ago. If it has done well for anyone who would like to complete the circle with it and schlepp some back to me, I'd appreciate it.

I have to trade:
bamboos: gold, or thin purple culm that I forgot what it's variety is.
Phlox; White (David)
Daylilies (varied)
passion flower (purple crown, (white constance elliot)
siberian iris, (schwann), (?white butterflies?)
Maybe able to divide some hostas this year.
red rose, (?Parkland series?) still potted& growing well,
& maybe some other random stuff.

This is not exactly right next door, but there will be a fruit scionwood exchange this Saturday, from 10-Am to 5-PM at the Federal Way 320th street library, just three blocks west of the Sea Tac Mall on 320th, and about 10 blocks west of the I-5 Corridor. Admission is free.
There will be a WSU Hort. Graduate on site to help answer garden questions.
No pets, please
Bring a few extra bags and marker pens if you can, plus a few known scion/cutting varieties of ....
Apple
Pear
Fig
Quince
Plum
Grape
etc.

I wish I could make the scionwood exchange. I would very much love to learn about grafting as this is the way to get all kinds of extraordinary ornamentals started in your yard. Hope you run the scionwood exchange every year. Jim

So sorry I missed the GE. I had a car accident the evening before and tried to hook up another vehicle but was unsuccessful (hard to get volunteers who want dirt in their car.) Will be at the Olympia swap no matter what. Michele
