WANTED: seeds to jumpstart a high school greenhouse

I am a science teacher in Mt Angel, Oregon (home of the famous Oktoberfest!) and am trying to rejuvenate the use of our on-campus greenhouse.

I am in desperate need of any vegetable or flower seeds, suitable for a community spring and summer sale in the Willamette Valley (zone 8).

My students will be learning and working in the greenhouse and I also have a student working on an independent study project for greenhouse production. He has been working very hard to get the greenhouse up and running again and all we need now are seeds!

With deflating public school budgets, we are relying on this spring sale to help supplement our science budget and hopefully create continued opportunities for hands-on student learning. Plus, many community members will also benefit by starting home gardens.

Any amount or type of donated seeds will be helpful!

Please reply or email me at harris_carlie@mtangel.k12.or.us

...or feel free to direct me towards any known resources, that we might find useful!

THANKS!

Seeds of change has a donation program for non-profits & schools you might want to check out.

These seeds have recently returned from seed rack displays. The displays were placed in a variety of store environments; therefore, we recommend planting at twice the suggested sowing rate to compensate for the possibility of lower germination rates. Each box contains a mix of vegetable, flower and herb seeds.

My notes:
-requests accepted in January with deadline in March until supplies run out, so Jan is best
-one box of 100 seed packs per organization per year ($3.29 value per pack)
-$ 15.00 for postage and handling

Thanks so much for the link. I think I will try out seeds of change. I had come across a few different similar programs, but it was hard to tell if they were continuing the donation program or if they were reputable. It seems as though most places require postage (which is no big deal if I'm actually getting seeds) but will not provide a receipt (which I need for my school) nor will they acknowledge that the request was received.

But I think I've heard of seeds of change enough times to just put out my own $15. :)

Has anyone used seeds of change or another similar organization?

You'd have the copy of your form submitted & if you have a credit card can fax it in I believe. They'll return your $ if they don't have enough seeds to fill requests.

Our experience with their seeds has been fantastic. Our daughter ordered & received the $5 box deal they did last spring for individuals. All seed packets are hermetically sealed with expiration dates & seeds will last for years, so not a germination problem. She received a unique assortment of vegetables, flowers, & herbs. No peas, beans, corn, or carrots were included, but other things including squash, tomatoes, & peppers.
