Sled Dog Races

I don't know if everyone had sled dog races where they live so I thought I would post some pictures from this past weekend. We had the races both Saturday and Sunday and they were a blast. Temperatures were around -20 in the mornings warming up to about -8 in the afternoon. Oh, and add the usual windchill. :) We had Skijoring, 4 dog 4 mile, 6 dog open 6 mile, 6 dog purebred 6 mile, 10 dog 10 mile and a 1 mile kids race. I had a blast as I got to help bring the teams to the start line. Boy did I get sniffed by my own dogs when I got home.

This is a cool photo showing the excitement of the dogs. I love how he has all four paws off the ground. Yes that is me in the blue jacket and toque with my arms in the air.

There are a few guys around here who have dogs, but i've never heard of them racing. One guy does tours, though. Here's the link.

Marcia, That would be cool to go out on a sled dog tour. None of the teams that come here to race do that. Our dog bylaws won't let you go above 4 dogs so all the teams in the races are from out of town. You could skijor but that would be it with 4 dogs.

It was lots of fun Sierra. Another year till the next one. I think they were going to try and have a 25 mile race next year.

That is cool Syreeta! My old boss raised huskies for sled dogs and last I knew she had 9... better her than me! :0

At Festival du Voyageur in Winnipeg they have a short track dogsled thing you can pay to go on... just a short ride like kids would enjoy. It's fun - as I recall from grade 6 LOL.

BTW dogs know when you have been cheating on them with other dogs!

Looks like alot of fun!

I'm afraid my dog and I would probably be dead-beat after a 1/2 mile! LOL

I'm sure my dog could keep going, but i sure wouldn't be going after him!

Now, just as i said i hadn't heard of dog races around here, there was an article on the front page of the Dryden Observer about some dog sled races that were held in a little community near Dryden. So i guess it is around here. I checked to see if the online edition had a picture, but it doesn't. Oh well!
