| Any good movies you’ve seen lately?
Last night we watched Alexander The Great on Bell Express Vu, starring Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie, Val Kilmer and Anthony Hopkins. I really enjoyed this movie so I had to watch it twice since it was an all-day special.
LOL, should of payed more attention in Social Studies when I was going to high school!

| Does this mean we all don't watch very many movies? I don't watch very many......We rented a couple movies a couple weekends ago......but I don't remember what they were now. LOL. I was kind of watching out of the corner of my eye while I was painting. LOL. I'm just not one to sit down and watch tv or movies.....just to many other things I have to do and never enough time to get them done. sigh Sierra |

| Yeah sorry it sounds like we haven't been watching movies. Thought I was the only one. It takes one heck of a good movie to keep my attention for 80 minutes and there hasn't been one for ages. One I did kinda like, DH bought a dumb college boy movie called Old School and I wasn't going to watch it but I ended up LOLing through the whole thing. Hollywood, in general, is usually boring &/or stupid nowadays. |

| LOL, it sure does seem that we don't watch alot of movies around here! Last week Superstore's special was a set of movies for spending "X" amount. So anyways, I got the "Men of Honour" and "Antwone Fisher" set. We watched "Men of Honour" right away and it sure was good! We did watch it a few years back but had forgotten most of it. We have the Shaw on Demand thingy but for some reason we just never end up watching movies. |

| I don't watch very many movies either. We have lots of movies and tv shows on dvd (my better half collects them) but I have my select things I watch and that's it. I honestly get bored sitting by the t.v. hour after hour and would rather go to sleep or go on the computer than sit too long and watch t.v. I did go see Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride" on the weekend, however. It was okay. The stop action animation is excellent, but I found the story a little dull and the length of the movie very short (77 minutes). I know I sort of contradict myself. On one hand I say the movie was dull and it dragged, but on the other hand I am saying it was short in length. Anyways, it's a cute movie, but not as entertaining as his other stop action movie "The nightmare before Christmas". I thought it really wasn't a kids movie, but they deal with the subject of death in a nice way. And the popcorn was terrible. Usually you can at least have some decent popcorn. I only go to a few movies per year. Just my personal feeling, but I have a hard time sitting through a movie at home. Prior to that movie, I saw "Charlie and the Chocolate factory" and enjoyed that one. |

The last time I went to the movies, we saw Madascar. Which was ok, but I didn't think it was great. The last movie we bought was Shrek II, and it's really good. If I can remember correctly, the last adult movie I saw in the theater was Lord of the Rings III. That pretty much sums up my life.......it's whatever the kids want, that's what we see. :) |

| My wife and I usually go to Edmonton about once a month and go to dinner and a movie. We went last weekend and saw 'Flightplan' with Jodie Foster. Excellent show with a surprise ending. I recommend. Cheers Al |

| The last movie I saw in the theatre was probably 'Perfect Storm' when we lived in Victoria. Unfortunately we don't have a movie theatre here and when we go to the 'BIG' city, we have too many things to do or just want to go home rather than stay and sit somewhere for two hours. I do enough of that on the drive home. :) We usually end up renting a movie every weekend it seems. One of the really good ones I saw recently was 'Seducing Dr. Lewis'. It is about a small fishing village in Quebec where everyone has been on welfare for eight years due to declining fish stocks. They have a chance to get a factory but unfortunately they need a permanent doctor. Hence, 'Seducing Dr. Lewis'. A great Canadian film, oh it is subtitled as the movie in in french. :) 'Crash' was really good as well. It starts out really racist unfortunately. We actually almost turned it off except for a friends recommendation. Once the beginning was past it all starts clicking how that was part of the movie and it all makes sense. It is hard to explain until you have watched the whole movie. Syreeta |

| I so seldom get to the movies but when I do it is usually because somebody else recommends a film. The last movie I saw was "Wedding Crashers" which was kind of funny (although my daughter found it hilarious) but pretty filthy too. A typical two star movie. The best film I've seen in the last year was with Richard Gere called "Shall We Dance". I would definitely recommend renting it if you haven't seen it yet. Marilena |

| Be sure to check out the new release North Country which opens 10/21. Much of it was filmed near my town in Minnesota, Eveleth, and I was lucky enough to be an extra. I was able to see an advance screening in town last week for the cast & crew and the director, Niki Caro, was there. It is about a class action lawsuit filed by some female employees of Eveleth Mines many years ago. They won the case but it took about 14 years. Anyway, it stars Charlize Theron, and has some fabulous cinemetography. It was filmed last March with lots of snowy aerial views of the mine & landscape. You will see why gardening isn't always easy here, we have lots of overburden from mining (aka mine dumps). My yard is a good example, it is fill dirt from the mine, brought in to raise the lot high enough above the water table to build ahouse (1977, previous owners). I can hardly grow a tree so my gardening soil has to be purchased; black dirt around here is usually reed sedge peat...another issue. Low nutrients & pH. We keep trying though. |

| Cathy, I've seen the previews on North Country, looks like it will be a excellent movie. I love based on true stories... How lucky to be an extra, where should we look for you? Brad Pitt is doing a film called The Assassination of Jesse James in Fort Edmonton AB, I was coaxing DH to go see if he could be hired on as an extra because they were looking for rugged-bearded men. Hubby said, "no, I better not, Warner Bros. would take one look at me and fire Brad Pitt and make me the star, then I'd have to leave you for a Hollywood Starlet, so I best stay home and be with you" ;) Sharon |

| When they filmed parts of Insomnia starring Al Pacino, Robin Williams and Hilary Swank in Port Alberni my Dad ended up being one of the extras. It was neat watching the movie and seeing him in it. Apparently Robin Williams was having dinner at one of the local restaurants and after dinner he did a stand up comedy routine for the other patrons. How cool is that? Plus he made certain that all the extra food from feeding the cast went to one of the local food banks to help feed people. Syreeta, who really could care less about movie stars. |

Sharon, my husband wasn't interested at first either but I told him he would be jealous if I was in it and he wasn't so we did it together. We were at 2 days of filming, 2 scenes: the church confirmation and polka reception. You can't see us in either, but I did get filmed in a scene with Sissy Spacek, several takes, where she carries a pan of bars to a table at the party. She is in the scene of course, but we extras who followed her to the table were cut! Cathy |

Hubby and I had a stolen weekend just past and ended up seeing 'In Her Shoes' with Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette and Shirley MacLaine. Good chick flick and hubby enjoyed it for the character arcs. It was well written, well acted and great to see Shirley MacLaine again. By the way, hubby and I met at the local Edmonton film co-op so have a real love for the movies (and each other) but we decided we'd be happier, and financially better off making children and gardens, rather than films. Kate |
RE: Any Good Movies?

| Ooh... "In Her Shoes" is one I want to see. It is suppose to have two German Shorthaired Pointers and two Irish Setters in it. (My dog breeds.) Glad to hear that it is a good movie as well. Hubby gets nervous when I rent movies for either the title only (i.e.. "The Machinist", DH profession) or what animal is in the movie. Oh, do not rent "The Machinist", it is horrible. I know we have other machinists on this list and I would hate to put you through the torture of watching that movie. DH couldn't even identify all the machines they were working on. Syreeta |
RE: Any Good Movies?

| Well here is my take on the movies we watched lately. 'The Interpreter' with Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. I thought it was a really good movie and would recommend it. Sean Penn played his role well (when doesn't he"), and the role suited Nicole Kidman. It is your typical FBI/person needing help movie though. 'Monster-In-Law' with Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda. I found this to be hilarious. It might help that my own MIL and I clash quite often and could easily see myself wanting to do some of the same things. :D 'Batman Begins' Watched this one tonight, I think I liked it the best out of all of the movies. I liked finding out how it all began and it helped make the other movies more understandable. You may end up having to rent those afterwards. Lots of big named actors in this one. 'Finding Neverland' with Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet. This was very well done. I can't remember how much of this was based on fact, but even if it was only someones' imagination it was neat to see where his inspiration came for Peter Pan. To see the grandmother yelling at the kids with something in her hand that looks like a hook. You can guess who and what that became.:) Even DH liked this one, he kept trying to find all the 'ideas' that became characters, traits or events in Peter Pan. Syreeta |

| Cathy, I caught the movie North Country last night and it depicts both mining and life in the north quite accurately. The drama is a bit heavy and I couldn’t recommend it to someone who just wants some light fare. Anyone who is at all sensitive to coarse language, conflict etc. might want to give this one a miss. Ian |

| Okay...I have see a couple of movies Bewitched...not that good. Upside of Anger....not great Perfect man...alright Monster in law.....hilarious! Shall we dance...good Hmmm I saw one more but can't remember the name now. LOL Sierra |
RE: Any Good Movies?

I can recommend a few good movies I've rented lately. Merchant of Venice was excellent! Best of seen Al Pacino for a long time. I never read it in school so didn't even know the story - I was riveted. Off the Map is an interesting movie of people living off the grid in New Mexico. Beyond Borders with Angelie Jolie. A little older but I like it so much I've watched it twice on the Movie Channel. Tina |

| The new Harry Potter was good and we just saw Narnia and it was excellent. My son is amazed that I had never even heard of it B4 but I'm a hick or someting I guess.... Anyway was good. I just rented Polar Express which was entertaining. I have a problem with sitting still and watching movies at home. My neighbor brought over a Stephen King movie and it featured Anthony Hopkins (of course can't remember the name) but he befriended a boy and it was quite good. |

| Sea Otter Cove...yes, Batman Begins is a very good movie and I really enjoyed it. To all out there...My DH and I and another couple went out the other night to the theatre and we went to see Syriana and it was definitely not a 4 star movie like it was supposed to be. I'd give it a one. The scenes did not coordinate with each other...you were always trying to figure out what the scene was about and how on earth it was relivant to the movie. There seemed to be 3 stories going on at one time, although 2 of them joined at the end. We thought with George Clooney and Matt Damon being in it that it might be interesting to see. NOT! Anyways, we'll try something like a comedy next time. Merry Christmas to all!!! I'm just waiting for my teenagers to finally crawl out of bed so we can open gifts around here this morning. |
RE: Any Good Movies?

Seems like Christmas time when the kids are home is when we actually make the time to 'go out to a movie'! Went to see a couple this season: The Family Stone - loved it! The Producers - hated it! How's that for both ends of the spectrum! Margaret |
RE: Any Good Movies?

Christmas time we usually go see movies because I take time off work so I can... Have to drive 50 miles one to do so - so it is a big event for us. LOL We saw Cheaper by the dozen 2 - first one was better but good King Kong - good for action, didn't rely on gore, swearing to make a good action movie. The Producers - Sorry Margaret we liked it The Dick & Jane Movie - Son liked it alot, I didn't see it Not sure I said on my other post but have seen Narnia and liked it much. |

| I watched the Dukes of Hazzard the other night with my two teenage nephews. It was pretty bad but really the series was awful too, as I realized when I tried to watch it for the first time since I was seven. I used to love it when I was a kid. So the nephews liked it but I think they were just watching Jessica Simpson's big, errr... brains. Yeah that's it. Also finally got around to seeing Charlie & the Chocolate Factory which I thought was great. Love Johnny Depp in a weirdo role. :) |

No worries, echoes - I also hated Magnolia with Tom Cruise and it was nominated for 3 Academy Awards! Margaret |

| I watched Starsky & Hutch on the free movie channel tonight and thought it was pretty funny, it also brought back alot of memories. Sharon |

| Last night, DH and I watched Mr & Mrs Smith with Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie. I like it because of the romance and of course DH liked it because of the action. Not bad at all....In real life, those two are going to make one good looking baby! Sharon |
RE: Any Good Movies?

| I saw a very funny movie with John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Danny Devito, and Vince Vaughn called 'Be Cool'. It is the sequel to Get Shorty. I just love John Travolta. |

| Any of you watch Million Dollar Baby with Hilary Swank and Clint Eastwood, wow, what a touching movie. No wonder the actors won Oscars! This movie was very touching to me because I once worked with a patient/resident in Saskatoon who unfortunately had a hockey accident, he was quad-paralyzed from the neck down and totally dependent on all care and on a respirator to breathe. He was so young, handsome and athletic that he had so much going for him, girlfriends, friends, popularity, school, a future and then all of a sudden his whole life changed in one second. This movie makes you wonder what you would do....... Sharon |

Hi Guys, I just got in from watching the movie "Eight Below." I can recommend this movie. It is a feel good movie without a lot of gratuitous violence. The "based on a true story" part of the blurb is very loosely based. A good part of the movie was filmed in my area. I took the photo of a set from the top of the T-bar at the local ski hill in Feb 2005. I also took in "Narnia" recently, another film I liked. Ian

| Well, we've seen a few movies lately. I guess I should post what I thought of them. :) Weather Man with Nicolas Cage and Michael Cane. Slow, that is how I would describe it. I would pass on this movie, Michael Cane did a good job with his part but the movie story line bit the dust. North Country, Very good, Charlize Theron did a very good job again. Two For the Money with Al Pacino, Rene Russo and Matthew McConaughey. Very good, everyone did a good job and the story has a pretty good line. Plus you get to see Matthew McConaughey with no shirt, what could be better than that? :) Ian, one of the breeders that supplied dogs for the movie Eight Below was up here last year to race her dogs. Nice dogs that she has, some of them had great markings. I'll be looking for that movie when it comes out on DVD. Syreeta |
RE: Any Good Movies?

Hi Syreeta, I thought that you would like Eight Below. I’m not really a dog person and I went largely to see what they showed of my area. Still I thought that it was well done. I think that it has been doing well at the box office. Some of the parts supposedly in the U.S. were also taken here. A scene with the protagonist driving in a valley in the mountains was just a few minutes west of here. Ian |

| Oh my, what a beautiful movie/documentary, the other night I watched March Of The Penguins. This is the story of one year in the life of an Emperor penguin flock as they they march single file to their traditional breeding ground in the Antarctic. I laughed, I cried, I was in awe and incredibly amazed with these creators. The baby penguins are sooooo cute! If you haven’t seen this movie, you’re missing a great masterpiece of filmmaking, go rent it or watch it on BellTv. Sharon |
RE: Any Good Movies?

| Just finished watching North Country, you're right, what a powerful movie! |
RE: Any Good Movies?

| Oh yes, we also watch Elf last night, which was hilarious! |
RE: Any Good Movies?

We've seen a few weird ones lately...nothing fantastic... Silent Hill was supposed to be really scary and really good according to the girl at the grocery store...It didn't even scare me...and I'm a big chicken. I did enjoy The Wild though, and I think I'll rent Over the Hedge soon...oh and I want to see that new one with Ashton Kutcher as the deer...the one where all the forest animals are taking their revenge on the hunters...that one should be funny too...Not sure if it's the mommy in me coming out or what, but I've been enjoying the kids movies a lot more than the latest more 'mature' ones...DH too... |
RE: Any Good Movies?
| | |
I finally watched a movie or 2 worth mentioning. I haven't seen a great movie in a long time. But these 2 I recommend highly. Gridiron Gang with The Rock Guardian with Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher |
RE: Any Good Movies?
| | |
| We just watched 'Flyboys'. Great shots of WWI byplane warfare! Good to watch with DH, but its chick friendly too! Kevin Costner w/ Ashton Kutcher...really?! |
RE: Any Good Movies?

| My wife and I watched "Casino Royale", the latest James Bond movie about a month ago. Recommended!!!! Lots of action, with a good story line and doesn't have as many gadgets as in other bond movies. Cheers Al |

| Anyone watch the Academy Awards last night? Although I haven't seen Helen Mirren in "The Queen" yet, I'm sure pleased to see that she won for best actress. I've seen her in other movies and she so deserves it. Did you see what Meryl Streep wore to the Awards, she is usually dressed so gracefully at awards, but this time it looked like she just rolled out of bed, my lord at least she could of pinned her hair up ;) Sharon |
RE: Any Good Movies?
| | |
| Didn't watch the Academy Awards but we did go to see "The Queen". It was fabulous - definitely worth going to see. Margaret |
RE: Any Good Movies?
| | |
Oh that’s great to hear Margaret, will have to see the Queen for sure then. According to the previews, Helen Mirren sure does look like the Queen. |
RE: Any Good Movies?
| | |
| I didn't watch the Oscars but I caught a minute of the red carpet and Helen Mirren looked so beautiful and her gown was perfect. I like to see the older actresses getting some attention for once. |
RE: Any Good Movies?
| | |
| I agree Gil, I want to look like Helen when I grow up ;) She is so beautiful! |
RE: Any Good Movies?
| | |
| Not that I've ever actually seen the Queen...LOL...but Helen Mirren certainly was convincing in the role, both in appearance and persona. The other characterizations were, I thought, rather uncanny; especially that of Tony Blair and Prince Charles. I would be interesting in hearing what others thought. |
RE: Any Good Movies?
| | |
| I didn't see The Queen until May 2007. Helen Mirren was great, but the actor who played Tony Blair really nailed him. Can't recall the actor's name, but he was just perfect! |
RE: Any Good Movies?

| I watched Hannibal Rising the other night, by myself. I quite enjoyed it and thought that it finally explained alot. I loved the reference to Melville, SK. at the end. We've got friends that were raised in Melville. I've never been there but I thought it was a prairie town - not a town surrounded by forest? Is this a big movie "oops"? Has anyone seen Beowulf? I want to go to see it in the IMAX theatre. But, I think I just want to see the IMAX effects. Not sure if it's the actual movie that I want to see. Shauna |
