Sorry Guys it is taking me so long. Between making a Christmas present for everyone in my Family, going away to where it was warm and green for a bit I've been pretty busy. I'll try to find something tonight or tomorrow. Syreeta

Okay here we go. Everyone ready and have their thinking caps on? What were Lilacs called when they first arrived in England and why? (Must have both answers.)

The common name lilac is from the Arabic word laylak or the Persian word nylac both which mean blue. Ironically, in English lilac refers to a more purplish hue? Sharon

I'll try again... Way back, Mock Orange were known as Syringa because the stalks and branches thereof, when the pith is taken out, are hollow like a pipe? Sharon

What do Mock Oranges have to do with lilacs? Sorry Sharon I don't understand your answer. Syreeta

Blue-pipe tree was the ancient name of the Lilac, a reminder of the time when pipes were made of its wood. Is that the answer?
