I don't think there are many Js!

RE: Plants & Misc. starting with 'J'

I just have Jovibarba - and they are only 1/16" so far... not photo worthy. :0(

 o
RE: Plants & Misc. starting with 'J'

Just come back to this thread when they're a little bigger!

I wonder if i should start K right away? I checked through my stuff and didn't find anything that starts with J, unless it's Hosta 'June'.

I've never heard of Jovibarba before. Will have to look that one up. Just thought of junipers.

Yup, J's are hard.

Laurie, Jovibarbas are like Sempervivums but according to Gardens North have "campanulate flowers". Which I think means bell-shaped. I'm trying them for the first time this year. Very good germination so far.

RE: Plants & Misc. starting with 'J'

Oh, cool. You'll have to post pics when they get a bit bigger. Are they as hardy as Sempervivums too?

 o
RE: Plants & Misc. starting with 'J'

Here’s a picture of a Jovibarba taken today.
I seeded them the previous spring.
The pen is for comparison

Anyone have pictures of johnny-jump-ups, jacob's ladder, jack-in-the-pulpit, or jackmanii clematis?

I have a Junco. At least 50 have descended upon our yard and have made it home, hopefully to stay for the summer but I think they generally move on further north. A few dozen of them singing in the backyard with some robins and house finches chiming in is just beautiful. DH got this pic today.

Sorry about the size of that picture folks - I resized and it's small in photobucket but big here. Hmmm.

 o
RE: Plants & Misc. starting with 'J'

The picture size is just fine Pudge. Sometimes that photobucket likes playing tricks ;) Btw, it's a great shot of a junco too.

Ian, thanks for the pic of the Jovibarba. Do they get any bigger than that?

RE: Plants & Misc. starting with 'J'

Hi Laurie,
These plants are new to me as of last year, a Gardens North oddity.
I believe that I got a species mix so they vary a bit.
I have some that are a bit bigger, that look just like miniature Sempervivum.
Some of the ones have tiny rosettes around the plant, which suggests that they are of mature size.
They grew easily from seed so I suspect that the lack of interest in these plants in the garden world is because they are less than striking.

prairierose,

here is Jacob's ladder... and quack grass, but I was saving it for 'Q'... :)

 o
RE: Plants & Misc. starting with 'J'

Lovely quack grass! Wait till we come to 'W' - i'll invite everyone to peruse all my web albums and check out all the weeds in all the pictures! LOL

Here's a white Jacob's Ladder:

That's my favourite thing about you Marica, you don't photoshop out your weeds. LOL.

(I have weeds too, don't tell anyone!) :o

Ian, what a nice Jovibarba. You're always such a help with the C&S. :0) Have yours flowered at all? I googled them and found tons of pics but no flowers. Was there much variation in leaf shape and colour in yours? I like the red and green on yours. I am thinking I will plant mine in some kind of gravel dish where they can be viewed close up.

 o
RE: Plants & Misc. starting with 'J'

Hi Gillian,
I can’t say that I’ve noticed any flowers.
The variation is about that of a collection of Sempervivum.
I suspect that some of the red is because the snow and ice had recently departed.
Some succulents seem to be red early in the spring.
The rather battered looking leaves above the Jovibarba in the photo are of a Lewisia.
Those green up later in the season.

RE: Plants & Misc. starting with 'J'

Holy cow, CAN you Photoshop your weeds out??? Is it sort of like Round-up?? LOL

 o
RE: Plants & Misc. starting with 'J'

Ya if there is a way to photoshop out the weeds...do tell. I would love to know how on both sides of the fence!? In the garden and in garden pics?

RE: Plants & Misc. starting with 'J'

Oh yes girls it is very easy - what you do is take a picture of your crappy yard with weeds and caterpillars and stuff, and then you find a nice catalogue picture of say Autumn Sunset or Garden Party, and wherever you have a weed in the picture you paste a nice picture of the catalogue rose. Caterpillar holes can be filled simply by using the "clone" tool, you add the leaf back in. ;0)

Just don't ever volunteer for a garden tour.

 o
RE: Plants & Misc. starting with 'J'

Well, so much for that idea, then! :>

 o
RE: Plants & Misc. starting with 'J'

If you have caterpillars just say that you are feeding future butterflies.
Make an exception for cabbage whites, with them it’s Kill! Kill! Kill!
Ian

 o
RE: Plants & Misc. starting with 'J'

Yes cabbage whites and of course the dreaded forest tent caterpillars :0( grrr

Further research has revealed that Jovibarbas take several years to reach flowering size. Once a rosette has flowered it will die, but leaves numerous offsets.
