Looks like a Spuria Iris.

Thanks Sharon. Looks like that's it. I guess its the wider foilage that sets them apart from Siberians? The Spuria and Siberian blossoms all looked so varied when I was searching.

I got a couple of Spurias on order from Chapman's. Never grew them before so I gotta see how they do.

Toots, what kind of sun/soil conditions, etc did they get in your friend's yard?

I just got my first spuria through a trade a few days ago. I have also never grown them before. I have it potted up but am not quite sure into which flowerbed it will go.

Brenda, she had them in a southwest facing bed against the house. Her soil is likely a silt with some clay and she's added manure to it as well. I don't think they were growing as big as they should though and they'd been there for years. Not sure if she was just keeping the clumps small on purpose or if they weren't spreading. Some of the pictures I've seen on the web have been of quite large clumps like a siberian iris would grow. According to the link below they were in an ideal spot, though, so maybe its just our climate.
They are a neat looking flower. Would like more myself :)

Here's a couple of pictures of my iris patch, which we ID'd on here as possibly spuria iris last year. It's continuing its quest for world domination. The plants are 3-4 feet tall and the patch is very, very thick - I think I may need to dig it up next year just to thin it. I have them in full sun, and water them whenever my tomatoes and cukes need a drink. They're tough and very vigorous. I'm not that nuts about the flowers because the color blends right in with the leaves, but I love the look of the foliage.
