| Hey, anyone got any big lily plans this year? I'm scaling back due to a lack of sun in my yard... looking more for heucheras, ligularia, hostas etc. now.
But I have a Lily Nook voucher so I'm going to give their 'Oriental Collection' a go. I really like the look of MUSCADET, WILLEKE ALBERTI & DIZZY, then the other three are just a couple of bucks more so why not? How about everyone else? |

| Ooo, hostas can be addictive too! I wish I had more shade so that I could get more hostas. But full sun is what I have and lilies do well for me. Can't say I have any big lily plans for this year, but if we get a tour going to the Lily Nook this July, I wouldn't be surprised if a couple followed me home ;^) I seem to be drawn more to the orienpets and OA types. I've put a few of these in last year, so I'll know better as to their hardiness by spring. I also put in a couple of martagons this past fall, so I'll see how I like them in a couple of years. Thank goodness lilies don't have a big footprint, so that they can be shoved into any little space!lol |

| I'm trying to get more lilies established in my garden for sure. Was going to place an order from Lily Nook, but decided just to get some from Botanus as I was ordering perennials from there anyways. Aphrodite Asiatic I seem to be hooked on the soft pinks, yellows and whites. They're so pretty. A few questions: Is it ok to plant marties in the spring? Thanks in advance. |

| I'll try to answer your questions. "Is it ok to plant marties in the spring?" "Any tried and true martie varieties I should be looking for in particular?" "Are species lilies very hardy?" Watch out, lilies can be very addicting! ;^) Hope this helped, |

| I agree with Laurie on everything there. The species are so variable depending where they originated. The two hardiest that I know of are L. tigrinum (the good ole Tiger Lily) and L. philadelphicum (the Wood Lily). They might seem ho-hum and some people hate the tiger lily for the babies it has all over the place, but both are actually quite nice and easy to grow. The Wood Lily is native to North America and is extremely locally variable, from red thru orange to yellow and with or without spots. The Tiger Lily also had colour variations; I have a yellow one (see L in the alphabet series in our gallery) that is very nice and doesn't seem to spread as much. |
|
| Remember that even martagons that are named (and not crosses) are species too. They are among the hardiest, and certainly easier to cultivate than L. philadelphicum. I doubt you will ever find martagon bulbs for sale in spring. Given the long tramatic storage period of the bulbs through the winter, shoots would surely not emerge the first spring, and maybe never! FYI, transplanting martagons in spring and summer has been done quite successfully, given that it is done relatively quickly, with an intact soil ball and no shipping involved. |

| "I doubt you will ever find martagon bulbs for sale in spring. " I just got my Vessey's catalogue the other day, and they have them for spring delivery. They're also for sale in Botanus' catalogue. This is another "buyer beware" situation. |

| Thanks so much for the help, all of you. I think I'll wait till Fall for marties and maybe wait on the species lilies for awhile, at least until my garden is more established and I have a better idea of what I can grow. Laurie, I saw the marties as well in Botanus' spring catalogue, but also only in fall catalogues elsewhere. Hence my confusion. I think they're too pricey to take the chance! A friend of mine has shared pieces of hers in the spring at our perennial exchange and they do well, although they don't bloom till the next year. PS: Thanks for the forewarning, but I'm already happily addicted :^) |

| I'm going to jump in with my experience re: planting martagons. I have four varieties so far, two species and two hybrids. I love them all (especially the hybrids); I sure wish they weren't so pricey...I'd fill my yard with them. Half of my bulbs were planted in the fall, and half in spring. Fall planting is probably best for most lilies, since the bulb contains the maximum nutrition needed for growth; I'm sure that the nutrients are somewhat depleted during storage for spring planting. Having said that... My first spring martagon bulb came from Peek's Perennials, several years ago. It might even have been my very first experience with martagons. I remember planting it in a pot (since it was quite a small bulb and I didn't want it to get lost or damaged in the garden). I watched for growth--and waited, and waited, and waited. And gave up. And then forgot about the lily. At the end of the gardening season, I noticed the lily pot among the others on my deck, and decided it was time to compost the potting soil. However, when I emptied the pot, out fell this lovely, plump bulb with masses of healthy roots attached. It was planted, carefully, into the garden and it's been growing, blooming, and increasing ever since. My second spring-planted bulb came from Vesey's. It, too, is doing well. Martagons seem to take a long time settling into their new home. Fall plantings have all fall and the following spring to start new growth. Spring plantings appear to take the entire first growing season to get going. I would not hesitate to plant martagons in the spring, as long as the price is reasonable, and as long as I were willing to wait until the following spring to see any green growth. The only ones that Botanus and Vesey's are offering, this time of year, are the species. Although they're lovely, they don't have the impact or beauty of the hybrids. The really, really gorgeous ones are sold in the fall. That's just been my experience. Hope this information helps. |
|
| I started Martagons from seed last year, and just seeded more (Pink Wings) the other day. Last year I did manage to get bulbs and a green leaf on each - I think there were about a dozen or so in total. I left them in the container they were growing in until fall then planted them out. I'm really hoping for their survival. (And I'll let you all know in about 5 years what the blooms look like, LOL). Last week I also seeded Lilium monadelphum and L. regale. Lilies are sure a long process from seed, but for me who's never satisfied with just one of something (even tho I only really have room for just one of anything), it'll be worth it if they all do grow and bloom. I am sooo tempted to order the lily collectin from Costco (100 bulbs for $75) but I probably won't unless I start a new bed somewhere. If I knew my black she-devil of a dog would stay out of the back beds, I could fit 20 groups of 5 back there easily. But she still likes to pounce thru there from time to time which was the reason I took most of the lilies out of there to begin with. I planted about 50 new lilies last fall (30 are unnamed for cutting purposes). And there were a bunch of new ones last spring, too. They're my favourite flower - it's so hard not to just keep buying and buying. |

| I started martagons from seed a few years ago.....I can't remember when exactly but probably 4 years ago....There were 2 or 3 with blooms last year, and I expect more this year. Mark martagons planted in the spring, as they won't show up the first year...and maybe not the second. I had one decide to show itself on the third year, and I had forgot that it was even there.....LOL! I really like species lilies.....they may not be as showy as the hybrids....but they are just as beautiful in the right spot in the garden. A subtle beauty.....I guess. Sierra |

| Toots I ordered the tigers from Botanus in the spring of 2005 and all them bloomed that year. Then last year in spring 2006, I had ordered L. henry and L. pardalinum and those too bloomed the same year. Geez, I usually save my catalogues for a couple of years but I can't find my fall 2006, I must of lent it out to someone at work. I do have the fall 2005 and they don't sell species or tigers. They have quite a selection of marties, don't they. I love that they are in zone 2. I guess I'll never know til I try, as far as the lilies go. I'll mark them well and hope for the best with the tigers and try the martagons in the fall. |

| I'm thinking of ordering 'Elodie' Double Lily, however I'm wondering if there is much of a difference or if this is the same as Aphrodite, which I already have? Sharon |
|
- Posted by laurie_z3_mb sw MB (My Page) on Sun, Feb 11, 07 at 11:22
| Sharon, looking at my picture of Aphrodite and comparing it to the Elodie, it looks like the Elodie has a few spots in the center, where Aphrodite is fairly clean. The colour and shape looked to be fairly similar though. It's kind of like Dotcom and Strawberries and Cream, S & C has a bit more speckling, but they're so close to each other that you'd probably have to see them side by side to identify them. Sometimes you wonder if it's worth having both if they're so similar? |

|
| I've read with interest the comments made about planting lilies, especially martagons, in the spring. I was recently at a gardening convention where they had lily bulbs for sale from the Manitoba Lily Society. Of course I could not resist temptation and purchased 2 LA's and a martagon I had read about called Rosalinda. There sitting in a cool dark basement room for now. My question is how to keep them healthy until I can plant them. Is it best to pot them up or just leave them as is? Or should they be refrigerated? My concern is that they will be exposed to ethylene gas from fruit and spoil. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. |

| Debbie, I would hate to say one way or the other about what to do with those bulbs. My suggestion is to email the Strohman's at the Lily Nook and ask the professionals, and then let us know what they tell you, because I'm curious as to what one should do in your situation too. Here's their address from their catalogue: info@lilynook.mb.ca Good luck, |

| Hi there, Thanks for the info on the U of SK lily. I'll have to track it down and see if I can find a photo. Re: martagon and other lily planting in spring, if you have them in a cool dark place (like an unheated basement between 4 and 8 degrees C), they just need to be checked every so often to see if they are sprouting. As soon as you see evidence of new growth, pot them up and water sparingly until they break ground. I often leave them in the cool basement after they are potted from the MRLS spring seminar bulb sale in March/April and that keeps them slowed down a bit in growth. I was at the convention you spoke about, too, Debbie. Whatever you do, do not put your lilies in the fridge with any fruit. I have a dedicated fridge for lilies. Maybe you saw me there. I did a bearded iris presentation on Saturday. BJ |
|
| Now if those lily bulbs were in the frig in a ziplock freezer bag, wouldn't that keep out any ethylene? Where as the cheap baggies that need twist ties are not completely airproof (like waterproof-get it?) freezer bags should be airproof, or the contents would be prone to freezer burn. What say all you thinking minds out there? Still, the closer to freezing that you can store the bulb, the better it will be, as the goal is to plant it outside as dormant as possible. Pot it up, yes, but in a barely moist, light medium. Your goal is not to make it grow roots, but to lay as dormant as it can without loosing moisture, yet not to moist as to encourage mold or rot. |
|
| I heard back from Nigel Strohman at the Lily Nook in Neepawa. He suggested to keep the lily bulbs in the fridge unless they have a sprout greater than one inch; in that case they should be potted up. He did not address the issue of ethylene gas from fruit. I would be interested to know if storing the bulbs in ziplocks would be safe as the previous poster mentioned. And to BJ, yes indeed I heard your presentation on Irises and it inspired me to get more for my garden! Thanks. Debbie. |

| I wouldn't store bulbs in plastic... just based on conventional advice combined with food-related experience. If you have two different vegetable drawers and keep fruit and bulbs separate it should be ok. Besides which, if you have to plant them, it's not long till spring now! |
|

| Debbie, I was also at the same convention in the beginning of Feb. in Dauphin. Which garden club do you belong to? As for the gas the fruit gives off...carrots and apples should never be stored together in the same fridge. Both will get an off flavor. If I store bulbs in the fridge and also have apples in there then I notice that the flower of the bulb will not develop as nicely and fully as it should have. I have a bottom crisper full of apples yet from last fall's crop and the hyacinth bulbs that were stored in a different part of the same fridge did not open as nicely and fully as they should have. But come spring they will be planted outside next to the south side of my house and therefore they will bloom outside in the future. Brenda |
|
| Hi Brenda. I belong to the West Kildonan Hort Club in Winnipeg. Are you from the Brandon area? How did you enjoy the convention? I loved hearing Sara Williams speak and also Dr. Herman from North Dakota. It was a lot of fun and the Dauphin club did a great job I thought. Next year I hope to be able to go to Brandon. As far as my lily bulbs, I checked on them yesterday and they are already sprouting; the martagon is already about 2 inches tall so I've potted it up. How deep should I plant them in the pot and what size pot should I use? |
|
- Posted by plantaddict487 Zone 2b MB CDA (My Page) on Thu, Feb 22, 07 at 16:39
| Hi Debbie, For the martagon that has sprouted, I'd use a 2 gallon pot and leave it in the pot till fall. At that time you can plant it in the ground. In order not to disturb it, you might want to plant everything, soil mix and all from the pot. Might save some time in establishing. Other bulbs, asiatics, etc. can be planted in 6, 8 or 1 gallon pots depending on how long you plan to leave them in the pots. You can get them growing in a small pot and then plant them any time after frost danger is passed. I usually use 1 gallon pots and leave them in the pots till fall. HTH, BJ in SW MB |

This year I was only able to stay until noon on Saturday because of other previous commitments (like flying to Florida the next day). Dr. Herman was so interesting it was a shame that we couldn't view his newly developed shrubs and trees. For those who weren't at the convention and are reading this post, Dr. Herman is from North Dakota and has made many many new introductions of shrubs, junipers and trees for the prairies over the years. He presented a slide show of 36 new introductions already for sale at nurseries on the prairies and had another whole set of slides of things that he was working on. If it weren't for men like him we wouldn't have all the new shrubs and trees and perennials that we have available for us to plant in our landscaping. Brenda |

Lily beetles are very scary and so far we don't think they can over winter in Zone 2 and 3 but they are definitely spending their summers in various Manitoba locations so the Manitoba Regional Lily Society is really on the look out for anyone who spots them in their garden. Would appreciate hearing back from you. BJ in SW MB |

| Unfortunately, the lily beetle has been spotted in Portage la Prairie for a few years now and a couple of sightings were made in Winnipeg this past summer. The MRLS will be running another telephone line in Portage la Prairie where we are asking that people phone in and report the little beastie. Someone will then call you back and may even visit your garden to verify then help you out with some suggestions for control measures. If we can get these guys before they become established we may have a chance of getting rid of them before they do too terribly much damage. I'll get you the telephone number, cat2006, and post it. I think it becomes effective as of March 1st but I'll check and let you know. All you need to do is give me your names privately and I can reserve your spot. You would then come to the CanadInn at 8 a.m. April 7th and pay your $20. Also on the program besides the lily beetle is a bulb sale and a speaker from the US on his hybridizing work between martagons and asiatic lilies. I've seen it before and some of the things this guy (David Sims) is coming up with are amazing! It will be a great day to start off the 2007 gardening season. | Hi Mona, As far as I know, no list exists of the locations of lily beetle sightings. That said, however, we have had reports from Portage la Prairie area for years (in and around it) and last year a few sightings in Winnipeg (I don't know what part of the city). To my knowledge, that is the extent of their infiltration into Manitoba so far. So, we have a great opportunity to get rid of the wee beasties if we can keep them confined, educate the people about them, and come up with effective controls without nasty chemicals. John Rempel, Chair of the MRLS Research Committee will be making a presentation about the lily beetle project at the spring seminar in Portage, April 7th. BJ in SW MB |

| I wonder where the name "tango" came from? Is it just marketing again that makes it more desirable? I did a google search on tango lilies and there's so many different collections that come up. In one place they had listed 'Kentucky' as a tango, whereas the Lily Nook has it classified as a LA hybrid. Have they just made up a new group name for any lily that has heavy speckling in the center? It seems funny that this new group name has only come out this year, yet Dot.Com has been around for a few years. Weird. |

| Hey everyone! back to the University of Saskatchewan Lily, we have just finished packaging 2,000 bulbs available only at 'Gardenscape 2007' Prairie Land Exhibition location. Hope to see you there. This is a very hardy lily, good for our northern landscapes. The bulbs grow very quickly so you'll be quite pleased how easy it is to propagate. Go to the U of S website for a chance to win a lily bulb and see a picture. Marylee |

| Shelley, I read your Yahoo email at the Iris group about your mislabeled Lilies from Veseys, when will they ever learn! I wonder how much $ they lose in sales from credits/ refunds. My Lilies that I ordered from Veseys this spring haven't opened yet, but I'll be watching very closely! Btw....I noticed that The Lily Nook is updated for fall orders ;) I'm placing an order with Parkland Perennials and still waiting for Valley K to updater thier website too. Darm, a nice man from way up north sent me a ton of seed this spring and I'll planning on starting some this fall (some need a cold period), should be exciting. Anyone new to the forum, please come visit our Far North Gallery, lots of lilies and other plant photos to see ;) Happy Gardening! |
|
| Sharon, I believe that most gardeners do not complain or even notice that they have mislabeled items. But us diehards want what we order. At least I do anyways. If they do not credit then it's false advertising. Shelley |

| Sharon, are you absolutely sure you'll have enough lilies? That seems like such a short list!;^) I've only got martagons 'Gaybird' and 'Dalhansoni', and asiatic 'Cappucino' on order. There's always a big lily sale in Brandon at the end of September, so I may pop in there too. |
|
| I did my Lily Nook order late last night when my resistance was low. :) Asiatics Trumpet LA Hybrid Martagons Now i have to get an area ready for planting them! |
|
| Sharon,I did order Heathers Promise last year, but it was a dud. A lady in Humboldt had problems with hers not coming up too. I thought my list was big, yours is huge. You have some really nice ones on order. I forgot, I did order some Martagons from the LilyNook. Shelley

| Shelley, according to our private correspondence your memory is correct, those are the martagons you ordered. I only placed one order for lilies this fall through the Lily Nook. I was talking to Nigel at the Lily Nook the other day and all the lilies should be available. He also said that they were digging them at the end of next week. So, the week following, he would call me or email me and I would just take a drive down to go pick them up. My order of martagons from the Lily Nook... Now, to figure out where to put them. Brenda |
|
| Good to know that I am not entirely losing it Brenda. Sometimes it's tough for me to tell. I was talking with someone who breeds lilies and he recommended planting lilies in raised beds. Especially the Martagons and Species. This was for draining purposes. My lily bed is on a slight hill, so it drains away rather nicely in spring anyways. Not quite his idea of a raised bed but it should work well enough. Shelley |

| Oh heck, since The Lily Nook hasn't sent out my order yet, I added more to my order yesterday ;) Brenda Watts Oh yes, these are the trade lilies I'm getting in too ;) Naomi I guess I should be thinking of starting all those seeds from Darm last spring too. Can't wait till next year to see them all bloom! Sharon |

| Today at the Brandon MLRS lily sale I picked up a few more lilies. Of course, BJ gladly helped me fill my arms. We even had a young guy approach us while we were going through the martagons and asked us if we would be willing to have our pictures taken for one of the local newspapers. He asked what we were looking at...knowing nothing about lilies, he didn't know what a martagon was. He got a short, short version about why we would want martagons in our yards. He said he usually did the sports events. Sports and lily bulbs...hmmmm. no similarities. So, today's purchases... from trading with Laurie (thanks!!) And from trading with Shelley (thanks!!) Think I have some planting to do now. The forecast looks great for the next few days, so I am hoping to get these all in asap. Brenda |

| I got my S-W Gardens Lilies in the mail today, thanks Shelley for recommending them. I’ve been looking for Lilium White Henryi for quite some time now and finally I found a Canadian grower who sells this bulb. I couldn’t justify just ordering one bulb so I placed an order for 7 other bulbs as well. All were in stock, all were very healthy, some were the size of baseballs, especially Leslie Woodriff and the ones that were on the small side, 2 bulbs were given. One thing that I was not so happy with was that I had emailed them a question a few weeks ago concerning if they got my post-dated cheque in and approximate time when they would arrive with no reply back. Hmmm, perhaps they are too busy to answer emails at this time of year, but even so I am a paying customer. Nevertheless, I was very pleased with my first order and will look them up again next fall. I also got my Valley-K order on the bus today and The Lily Nook order yesterday, I'm going to be so busy the next few days planting them all! Oh yes, I started some delayed hypogeal seeds such as Martagons yesterday for their warm period too ;) Sharon |

| Hello fellow lily growers. I have a website with lots of pictures of the lilies I grow in Canada. Also reference pages for growing information. On my links page is a list of Canadian growers for Lilies, Daylilies and other sites. I don't sell any plants and is a reference/information site for people looking for more information on Lilies and Daylilies. I hope you can find it useful Take care Michael www.mikesbackyardgarden.org |
