LOVE your Prairie Peace roses Shelley and so glad you reposted pics of them. It was your pics that I saw last year, and the reason why I ordered 2 of them for this spring.
How big were yours when you got them and also, how old are they in these pics?

I have 3 PP roses in the above pic's. When I first received them, I was quite disappointed in the size of the plants. Now this doesn't mean that she sent me bad teeny plants....it more is that I was used to buying bigger roses locally. They were sent to me dormant and just starting to bud.
The first year they grew some, but didn't bloom. The second year they had a few blooms...but they were nothing spectacular. I was actually only going to give them one more year before I got out the spade to do some shovel pruning.
But what you see above is year #3. These bushes actually amazed me. The show was quite early. Much earlier than the other bushes I have. There is some repeat later...and I found the color to be more pink later in the season.
The trellis is close to 8' tall, so the height of this rose bush in my area is around 6'.
If anyone wants to watch there pennies...this bush does sucker. I already have some suckering happening.(And spoken for) So ordering one plant will be plenty.

I had planned on a clematis growing up a post with this rose infront of it.

As Shelly described the progress of her PP roses, I couldn't help but remember the old gardening adage. It's so true as I looked back on the pictures of my garden the first year I planted it and then this year, the third.
The first year they sleep.
The second year they creep.
The third year they leap!

I've been looking for this rose for years with little success -- one problem being that I'm in the U.S. Although I've seen it on lists as a recommended plant to grow in Canada, but it seems almost unheard of in the U.S.

One very kind person sent me some cuttings a few years ago, but I was unable to get them to root. Does anyone know where I can buy this rose (commercially or otherwise)? Thanks!

I ordered 2 PP roses from Sheila last year. Neither one of them ever rooted. She said if I want them replaced I'll have to pay the shipping which I won't do. That would end up at $100.00 for 2 roses. So I'll just chalk it up to a lost cause.Much as I would like that rose I will not order from her again.

What a beautiful rose, I had never heard of it.
I wonder why it isn't readily available.

The one I ordered this year didn't make it either. It had a shoot with three little leaves on it, and it just shriveled up. I watered it faithfully all summer, hoping for a surprise, but when I pulled it up this fall, there was nothing. I guess I'll try again another year. I haven't contacted Sheila about it, but I suppose I should.

I planted DOUBLE CARLOS RED and PRAIRIE PEACE last spring from Sheila and the shoots took off like a bang, by the end of the season they had grown a fair size.

No not $100 for shipping. Last year I ordered 2 @ $25 each and paid $25 for shipping and if I pay another $25 this year that brings the total for 2 roses up to $100. And I can not justify that.

Looking for cuttings of the Prairie Peace Rose anyone have any?

I just got an e-mail from Sheila Holmes last week asking if I still wanted my order for this rose as she was digging them up for shipping. I was quite surprised because I had completely forgotten that I had send her an e-mail in the fall requesting one. Anyway, I responded and ordered two so I can't wait to get them in and plant them to see what they look like. Stan

I just ordered 2 as well, and I was very happy and surprised to find out that she actually still has 2 for me! I expected to be put on the waiting list for next year. I'm so excited for them - thanks for the pictures everyone, you made me fall in love!

So I got my 2 roses yesterday, and I've planted them already. She sent me 5 sticks basically, with a tiny bit of roots on the bottom of each. I'm guessing she sent extra since there are very few roots. Does anyone have advice for how to encourage quick root growth? I planted them into fairly light soil with good drainage, watered them well and mulched them. What is the likelyhood that these "twigs" will grow? They were dormant and just beginning to show green-tinged leaf buds when I got them.

10-52-10 is rooting ferilizer. I hope they grow for you. Mine never did a couple years back.I am looking for Prairie Peace but don't want to take a chance on hers again.

In the spring of 2008 and spring of 2009 I picked up several Prairie Peace suckers from Sheila Holmes - all except one rooted well and that sucker didn't thrive because I didn't dig the hole deep enough and amend the soil properly. I first planted them in 2 gal pots (used Promix HP), tented with a plastic bag, and put them under 24 hr florescent grow lights in my basement. I didn't want to take any chances. As they progressed, which they indeed did (Prairie Peace is the most vigorous spinosissima I have) I cut slots in the plastic bag where growing shoots wanted out. At the end of June they were planted outside in a deep hole (24") - Promix HP with well rotted horsemanure and some native soil. They have exploded and some should reach 6ft. this year. I've done the same with Madelaine's Choice, George Will, and Betty Will - all suckers from Sheila.

As far as stimulating root growth, this year with all of my bareroot roses I soaked the roots for 4 hrs in a solution of 2/3 cup of hydrogen peroxide with 3-4 gal water. Hydrogen peroxide is known to stimulate root growth in rose embryos. The bareroot roses are thriving - many have 2-3 feet of growth with many buds. They were planted in Promix HP with biofungicide ( bacterium serillus).

I have rooted many bare root roses and shrubs plus worked in a green house for years doing the potting. This is the only bad luck I have ever had. Got a bare root Ballerina just this year from Ont and it is fully bushed out already.Looking forward to it blooming.

I think mine will probably make it; the twigs are leafing out now. I'm keeping them well watered, and I watered them once with half-strength rooting fertilizer. This heat wave really isn't helping though! It's been 29 above for the last 4 days or so. My new order of daylilies is struggling too.

Just an update. I got a phone call from the bus depot on May 19 saying that my roses came in and that they had been trying to get a hold of me since May 6th and I figured these roses were done. I went down to the bus depot with no expectation that these rose were alive well to my surprise they were alive and doing well. I had ordered two roses and was pleasantly surprised when I saw 4 fairly long cuttings, each about 14" to 16" long with lots of root growth on each. I've potted them up into two gallon containers because of the long root system and they are in the greenhouse how and doing well. Each cutting is starting to send out branches and they are getting nice color green. Will be transplanting into the flower beds once it warms and up and once I find a place to plant them.

Ginny - I did get a Prairie Peace rose in spring 2011..it has done very well and grows to a monstrous size if I let it! I did find her again, if you want it I have her email address somewhere...she did mention she is selling roses on kijiji. Unfortunately, by the time I tracked her down(or she tracked me down, actually, after I wrote her a letter), I had already used up my rose budget at Corn Hill. Oh well, another year!

Rose budget? You have a rose budget, Katie? Where can I find one? Lol!

Sheila just sent me an email and is saving a couple for me as well as Suzanne. :) Good to hear PP is doing well out at your place. There is hope for me......I think......I could really use a little Prairie Peace.....or a whole lot! :)
