Calla Lilies

I friend in town is looking at purchasing Calla Lilies for her garden. I know in this zone you have to dig them up and store them but not much else. How hard are they to grow? You see them for sale lots but for some reason I rarely see them growing in people gardens. Are they as easy as Dahlias to store or do they require more work? Any information from anyone who has grown them would be great.

RE: Calla Lilies

Calla Lilies are NOT my friend!!!! I bought them and planted in two pots last year for the first time.....One simply didn't grow at all.....the other started and then died......you might remember the sad :-( looking pot in the container garden....I eventually filled it with some extra annuals to hide it.

Planning on trying some again this year...but will try to purchase as soon as they come out locally....afraid that mail order ones might show up to late for our climate. Kind of like begonias.....I don't order them either...they come way to late and just start to bloom then get frosted.

I'm also interested in info from someone that has had sucess with them.

Hi Syreeta

I have grown Calla lilies and they are not hard to grow. I would start them inside in April and then put them out later, when danger of frost is past, in a warm place in the yard. I have always grown them in pots as it is easier to grow them because I think that Calla lilies like the extra warmth from the sun heating the pot. I tried them directly in the ground one year and they did nothing because I think the soil does not warm up enough. The one thing they like is to be well watered. They do not like to be dried out!!! I kept mine for about four years until I left them in my greenhouse one fall and then forgot to bring them in for the winter :( . They froze and I haven't replaced them because I needed more room in my greenhouse in the spring for my canna colection.

Syreeta, for me, storing them is the easy part. That I have noooo problem with! But getting them to bloom in subsequent years is my biggest problem. For winter storage, I treat them just like you would a gladiolus bulb. Dig them out, dry them, and throw them in a cold room for the winter. I think this year I'm going to try them in a larger container and see if my luck changes. I have been growing them in a fairly shallow pot, about 8" deep, so maybe they need more leg room than that.
And I second what Al said about giving them lots of water, and I believe they like lots of fertilizer too.

Good Luck,
Laurie

Ok I bought some new Calla Lilies....1 pack of 2 white and 1 pack of 2 purple at HD. I planted each bulb up in a 4 inch pot and have them on the heat matt to see if that will give them a better start than the ones I tried last year. And yes I did do a little Calla dance around them while chanting grow da*n it. :O

Sierra....hoping for some better luck with these ones.
