Not even close, SCG. Up to 35 cms of snow expected here, to add to the several feet of the junk already on the ground. Sigh.....

Nope, no spring here either. Although that system is supposed to pass a few miles south of us so that would be nice.

SCG, if you got the red/yellow snaps out of the box of seeds, I have to warn you that a) they were from me, and b) I have since discovered that they are an F1 hybrid so they won't be exactly true to form. My guess is that they'll be some combination of red and yellow and will have a dwarf habit, but they might not be completely uniform. Sorry about that!

Northspruce, yes, we've grown 'Twinny' snaps since they were first introduced a few years back. They're excellent dwarf border plants in a very attractive range of colors, especially the 'Bronze Shades' with their rustic orange tones, though other real favorites are 'Violet' and 'Apple Blossom'.

I forgot about the 'Fiesta Time' hollyhocks I started, the red and white beauties are always commented upon!

I'm excited to see the Twinny Bronze even though I'm not growing them for me. Would you say that they trail at all? Or are they upright?

The 'Twinny' series produce dense compact upright plants that do not trail. I have about 50 seedlings (mixed colors) and have kept last years plants over in the garage and will be interesting how they perform in their second year.

northspruce, yes they were from the box: finding that out is a) amazing and b) brilliant. if you ever seen my planting style it is probably better I don't know what i am growing!!

I grew several of the twinny last year and other than expensive they made me love snaps and mine didn't trail....stuck at about 12" tallish

Come to think of it, i took some snap seeds last year that were supposed to be white and weren't. Can't remember what colour they turned out to be, a rosy colour, i'm thinking, and they were short as well.

Forum's gonna go quiet this spring with everyone out planting!

I kept some annuals under lights over the winter. Some would get quite tall and I'd cut back, then think I should try to root the cutting. This has worked quite well but it has filled up the areas beneath the lights, and the packets of seeds I've bought (mainly tomatoes) are looking at me "where we gonna go?" I think windows will be pressed into use again.

Of my regular choices, the only annual that I will not be growing this year is Impatiens - had the Downy Mildew problem last year for the first time and I read that it stays in your soil for years.

Does it affect impatiens in containers? I don't think mine had it last year, not that i can remember.

Look up Downy Mildew of impatiens and you'll find that it is wide spread problem. It's important to get disease free plants...but how can you tell they are healthy when there are no signs when you buy them? I bought mine in flats at Costco.

Anyway, much as I love this plant (has always performed well in my garden), it's not worth planting just to have to replace midway through the season when they all shrivel up and die.

What about if you grow them from seed? I've been doing that for quite a few years now.

I think you'll be okay if you grow from seed...the only problem might be if you have close-by neighbours that get theirs from a nursery (with soil that has been exposed to Downy Mildew), and the spores travel over from their yard.

No neighbours! I'll continue to grow my own then! :)

Ok, started "Scarlet runner" beans indoors and am going to abandon the project. In 2 days they are 9" tall. Anybody want to buy seedlings cheap?

I don't know if they'd survive the trip - will have to start my own!
