Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Posted by laurie_z3_mb sw MB (My Page) on

Well, the walmart here in Brandon has finally gotten in some bulbs. We were talking about trilliums on another thread, so I was delighted to see a package of 2 trillium grandiflorums for only $6.98. Unfortunately it's not the $2 that someone else had gotten them for, but I'm pretty happy anyway. ;^)

They also had cannas, caladiums, glads, hostas, ferns, and lots of dahlias to choose from. I'm hoping that the roses won't be too far behind either.

I also stopped in at the Greenspot and picked up 3 different kinds of coleus for $1.50 each. So I'll be able to take cuttings from them soon too.

I figured I'd start a separate thread for all our "finds" so that everyone can get in on the good deals. :0)

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Well, I also got some of those trilliums. LOL. They had both white and yellow. Does anyone know if both types are hardy here?

I also found 'centerfold' lily at HD..2 bulbs for 3.98 I think it was.

And Costcos $3 coupon just finished but even without the coupon, I think for the # of bulbs you get, the price is still good. I don't find the selection as good this year though.

Am I just noticing or does there seem to be more dahlias available everywhere this year?

Sierra

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Sierra, are the yellow ones called Trillium luteum? I haven't tried them but would love to....I'm going to have to check out my Walmart!

Thanks for the heads up gals!
Sharon

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Yes Sierra, I saw the yellow trilliums too, but decided to try the white ones first and see how they do. Sorry Sharon, I didn't look at the name on the back of the package of the yellow variety.

Sierra, I also thought of you when I saw all the different kinds of dahlias there! I don't remember there ever being that many to choose from either. There had to have been at least a dozen there.

I wish we'd get a Costco in Brandon. There's been some talk of one coming in, but until the construction starts you never know.

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Sorry, I didn't look at the name of the yellow ones either. I thought the same as Laurie, that I would try the white ones first. I potted them up in 4in pots.

I have already added all the dahlias that I am going to this year. I keep my eyes closed now when I walk by them. LOL!!!! To many dahlia tubers so little garden....hmmm wonder if we really need that driveway anyway. LOL!!!!

Sierra

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I went to our Wally World and they didn't have any Trilliums ;(

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Maybe they're just late in coming Sharon. Did they have any bulbs in yet?

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I'm going tomorrow too, but i would lay odds that ours doesn't have them either.

I've ordered plants, just about all that i can afford :) but i'm still wrastling with my Hortico gift certificate - do i order a bunch of perennials (i need them, i need them) or spend it on roses? What a dilemma......

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Sharon, hopefully they will come in so you can get some too.

Marcia, I just want to caution you about what I heard last year.....I have no experience buying from Hortico. I have a friend, that was not very happy with the roses he got from Hortico last year. He said some were really small and I think he said two didn't grow...He said they were going to replace some for him in the fall though.

Oh and of course you should only buy what you NEED!LOL!!!! Now if I took my own advice, I might not be sitting here wondering what to do with so many bulbs. LOL!!!

Sierra

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Oh rats. So i wonder if i should only order a couple of roses and use the rest for perennials. I'm really up in the air anyway about which roses i want. There's one called "Eddie's Jewel" and that would be perfect for the new baby, whichever sex she turns out to be. :D So of course, i need that. And i wanted a Simon Fraser since mine turned out not to be. And i wanted to order a Buck because all the rose-growers here are so enthused about them. Everyone has their favourites (the rose thread from last year), so i'd get lots of advice, but i don't have a real lot of room at the moment (will remedy that in years to come).... Always a dilemma, eh? LOL

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

when I saw the words "Greenspot" Laurie, I felt a shiver.
I just love that place. Speaking of finds thou, I found some good deals on bulbs at Veseys.com. They are based in PEI and have a spring catalogue out with a $25 coupon. It is also available on the web. They have some lovely gladiola collections on sale as well as I purchased an oriental lily collection. Does anyone grow lupins?

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Veseys have nice stuff but can be pricey unless they're on sale (or you have that coupon). The Rose Forum is filled every year with scathing reviews of Hortico's service; I have never ordered there though.

Rosedust, I grow lupines, are you looking for seeds or advice? I have extra seeds for pink and blue if you want them. They will flower a little the first year if you start them reasonably early.

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Hmmmm Last year I ordered a lot of lilies from Vesey's. I was not very happy with the order I received or the performance of the lilies. Because of this I had a rather large credit from them to use this spring. When I phoned my seed order in....the lady told me, they sold nothing that would grow in zone 2. I won't be ordering from them again.

I also grow lupins.....they are very easy to grow from seed. As northspruce says, if started early enough the first year, they will bloom with the rudbeckias and cone flowers. The second year and following years they bloom much earlier. Lupins are a short lived perennial and will probably need to be replaced after a few years. They will also self-seed if you let them. In my garden about the time the flowers are finishing, they get infested with huge blue/green aphids.....but these aphids don't seem to bother anything else in the garden.

Sierra

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Yeah, they had other bulbs in stock but no Trilliums. For that price, I would like to experiement to see if other species other than T. grandiflorum will be hardy in my zone.

I think I will go back today and buy that big bag of Acidanthera bicolor Peacock Orchids, maybe they will have something different in today as well.

Sharon

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Just returned from my Wally's World and decided that I would try the yellow Trilliums. Yes, Sharon, they are Trillium luteum. I also got:
3 dahlias each of 'Procyon' and 'Hawaii'
Crocosmia 'Lucifer'
2 bags of Sparaxis.

I tried the Sparaxis 2 years ago but it didn't sprout. These bulbs are all just starting to sprout so I decided to give them a try. The Crocosmia was in my SIL/BIL's garden last year in Vancouver and I just loved it. I'm thinking that it would look good naturalizing (hopefully) beside the house where I have put my 2 honeyberry bushes. It faces west so I'm hoping they can push the zone there. Trial and error, right?

You know, I don't even feel guilty this year when picking up spontaneous purchases. LOL. I didn't order a thing from anywhere and I'm going to indulge my cravings in the stores this year. FEED ME . . .

Shauna

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Shauna, I don't know if the Crocosmia 'Lucifer' will survive our winters. They're a zone 5, so will definitely do well in Vancouver. I had them last year in planters and they did very well. I haven't yet checked the bulbs/tubers to see if they're starting to sprout yet.

Rosedust, yes I do love the Greenspot too. So I take it you've been to Brandon before? They've got lots of new stuff coming in this year, like usual. Last week we had a speaker from there talk at a garden club meeting about the new things for 2007, and they're actually getting in some Buck roses. Only three, but it's a start! They're also bringing in some bamboo that is hardy to zone 4. Has anybody ever tried bamboo? Oh, yes, I also have grown lupins for years, and like Gillian said they're very easy to start from seed, just remember to nick the seed with a bit of sandpaper and they'll germinate within a couple of days.

 o
Crocosmia 'Lucifer'

How much did you pay for your Crocosmia 'Lucifer', dang I just ordered some from Botanus. LOL!
I plan on digging mine up for the winter ;)

Sharon

 o
Corms

I haven't yet checked the bulbs/tubers to see if they're starting to sprout yet.

Corms ;)

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Ahhh, corms they are! Maybe one of these years I'll get it straight. :0)

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

The Crocosmia were $6.98 for 20, Sharon. I picked some seed from SIL's last year but didn't get them going yet. I'm wondering, too, whether I should do them in pots, but this bed I was thinking about is right against the house facing west. It's always the first bed to thaw out and gets the most sun, other than my south veggie garden area. Looking at some of the websites about them again, they are definitely listed as zone 5 or 6. Probably pots, then. Botanus has 8/$6.75 so Wally's World 20/$6.98 is a pretty good deal.

Shauna

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Just teasing Laurie, heck I get mixed up on them too ;)

Wow Shauna, you sure got a good deal on your Crocosmias!
I think because our Wal-Mart is still new they don't order in all the products and just order the basic normal stuff. Or perhaps the garden manager doesn't have a clue what gardeners are looking for. ;)

I did buy a bag of Acidanthera bicolor Peacock Gladiolus (45) and a bag of Caladiums (10) for $8.98 each. I reread your threads on the Caladiums from last year and I think I will keep them indoors till the middle of June and keep them in the greenhouse during the summer. I tried years ago with this plant and the poor thing just got whipped by the wind and didn't like the cold outdoors. Will see how they do.

Oh btw, did any of you girls overwinter your Caladiums, if so, how are they doing?

Sharon

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I think our Walmart is the same as yours, Sharon. Nothing really there, just the usual glads and lilies. Were those Acidanthera white with burgundy? I looked at those, but didn't get them. I might yet, though - they'd match up nicely with the lily 'Centrefold', doncha think?

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Sharon, my caladiums ended up disappearing by the end of summer. I rooted around in the pots and didn't find anything left to bring in. :( I think they'd make an awesome houseplant though, but I don't want a bag of 10 for that. Maybe Home Depot will have them again in a smaller package this spring.

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I was at WM today and they had both kinds of Trilliums... I didn't buy anything. I'm super broke and was just looking for another shelving unit for the rest of my indoor planting lights. They didn't have the shelves anymore >:0(
Dang there were some nice dahlias though... do I ever have willpower this year!

I ripped my caladiums out of their planter and replaced them with New Guinea Impatiens by July. They hardly did anything and were all stringy and awful. Like Laurie says, they would probably be a great houseplant.

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Yes Marcia, those Acidanthera (ass-i-DAN-ther-uh) are fragrant, white flowers with burgundy centers. I'm not sure they will bloom at the same time as Centerfold lilies, they bloom late, end of August.

Here is a link that might be useful: Acidanthera bicolor - Peacock Orchid

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

It was a thought... I may or may not buy them.

Meant to mention that i got a round terra cotta thermometer at Canadian Tire for $4.99. I'm going to put it somewhere that i can see from my room so that i can wake up in the morning and know how nice it is outside already! :)

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Hey didn't I list the lilies I bought in this thread? Hmmmm I wonder where I posted that list. LOL! Off to find it.

Sierra

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions ....Whoops

Whoops, it was in the catalogue thread...I guess I saw Sharon post the list of lilies she ordered and put it there. DUHHHH! I wish we could have the capabilities to correct or delete our own posts. Anyway I put it here, where its supposed to be. These are new acquisition last week.

Okay Sharon, I have a confession. LOL!!!
These are the lilies I picked up at Costco last week.
9 Bahia Blanca
9 Expressions together in one bag and labeled
7 Angelique
7 Rodolfa together in a bag and labeled
18 star gazers one bag
9 muscadet
9 kissproof together in one bag labeled

All the above are orientals, From experience the orientals do very well in my garden

10 Amarone Asiatic lilies
10 Suncrest LA hybrids together in one bag.

These I potted up, because they were starting to grow.

I didn't see any species lilies there this year...with the exception of some trumpets.

I also got a bag of butterfly glads
and 4 bags of dahlias. :O

Sierra ;-)

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Sierra, a couple of years ago, I bought the Amarone/Suncrest combination from Costco. I love, love, love those lilies! My only (minor)complaint is that (in my garden) they don't bloom at the same time, so I don't get the great colour combination the package showed. The lilies make up for that, though, because Amarone has the most wonderful scent and Suncrest is simply beautiful. I was tempted to buy another package this spring, but I seem to be on a daylily/iris collection binge at the moment. :-) I hope you enjoy your new lilies.

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Hi, It never even crossed my mind to plant them together. LOL. Oh but now that you mentioned it, those colours would look fabulous together, to bad they don't bloom at the same time. Ya the asiatics and LA hybrids bloom at different times in my garden too.

I don't need anymore daylilies, but iris, now thats a different story. hee hee. I have been checking for when Chapman puts his new website for 2007. I am really looking forward to seeing how the ones I got from him last year do.

I also planted a bunch of new lilies last fall, so can't wait to see them this year too. :-)

Sierra

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Oh no Sierra! Did you get bit by the iris bug too? It's another terrible addiction..........

Fooey between the flu bug amoungst other things I havent done much shopping..I now have a great urge ..thanks girls..lol.. I did order 2 roses from Cedar Hollow rose farm (Pole Star and Polaries) savona

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Ha Laurie, I have had this iris addiction for many years. Just had trouble getting the tall bearded iris to survive the winters, but I never gave up, because I really like them. Once I found out that the smaller bearded are supposed to do better.....well......LOL!

Savona, we have had that darn flu bug too. We are finally feeling better, after two weeks. I have to say though that it didn't stop me from going to Costco last week though. LOL!

Sierra

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

That's funny Sierra, because I was the same way with iris. Never had luck with the TB's I ordered, so only relied on the tried and true divisions I got from friends. Then I met Brenda.......need I say more?LOL She definitely filled me in on the right irises to get! Right now I've got 3 TB's growing on a windowsill. Spartan, Rock Star and Beverly Sills who has leaves taller than 12" now. Apparently having them more mature and letting them settle in for the entire summer, they have a much better chance at winter survival. So I'm hoping!

Last summer I added a whole pile of dwarf and miniature irises, so I'm really looking forward to seeing how well they do this spring.

Well I got the "urge" satisfied this weekend :-)..I bought a package of 3 "Hawaii" dahlias and a package of red calla lilies from WM..then off to Art Knapps and bought a package of 2 Grand Cru asiatic lilies, 2 pink twinkle tiger lilies, and 6 more dahlias..I asked DH if he knew what this meant and he did...more digging..hahaha..savona

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Savona, don't those 'Hawaii' dahlias look like they are going to be awesome? We'll have to compare them and see how they do. I looked at the calla lilies, too, but I'm still deciding.

Shauna

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I stopped in Walmart in Airdrie on Friday, to pick up my son's prescriptions after he got his wisdom teeth out. Of course I had to wait for the pills...I picked up the white trillium, some glads, and a cinnamon fern. Does anyone have a cinnamon fern? Do they survive in zone 2?
Connie

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Connie, I bought a Cinnamon Fern last year from Holes, I'll let you know this spring if it's hardy for Zone 2. It should be, I think I had one growing in my Saskatoon garden because I can remember the cinnamon brown fronds.

This year I'm ordering Osmunda regalis purpurescens from Frasers, will see how this one does too.

We're going to Lloyd next week, hopefully their WM will have some Trilliums in stock.

Sharon

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Today I picked up a root of hosta 'Christmas Tree' at walmart. It was kind of sad, as it was the only hosta they had that I didn't! I guess I have too many.......time to quit. ;^)

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Laurie, yes yessss, Brenda is such a bad influence on us. LOL!!! The only TB that I am trying is the one sent in my order last year...I think its called white wedding or something like that. The ones I ordered were all Dwarfs.

Savona, grand cru lilies multiply like crazy. I had to thin mine a couple times.

Connie, I have seen Cinnamon Ferns growing here, so I would think they are ok for zone 2.

One of my trilliums has started to grow. Yay!

Sierra

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Thanks a lot you guys. :) Making me sound so terrible to get you interested in more plants. Too bad!! I can't help it!! What kind of perennial pictures should I post next?

BTW, I also bought the Christmas Tree Hosta at Walmart along with a Frances William Hosta the other day. I plan on planting them up tonight.

Laurie and I exchanged cuttings the other night. Ivy for plectranthus. Thanks Laurie! I also want to plant up those rooted cuttings tonight.

Brenda

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I guess we shouldn't be so hard on Brenda for feeding our addictions. It's just all those lovely pictures you post, darn it! ;^) It's like putting a kid in a candy shop. I want one of those, and one of those, and oh!, I HAVE to have one of those, and............:0)

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Haha, I agree Laurie. Post away Brenda, you have a following. LOL!!!

Sierra ;-))

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I visited Walmart yesterday, I was surprised at the hosta selection, they have about 4 or 5 varieties from gold leaf to variegated. I usually peak in the plastic bags to see if the bulbs show signs of life and most of the perennials seemed like they were sprouting.

I bought a kit of 3 tuberous begonia bulbs at superstore for $5 including the pot and soil. I had expected to pay the regular price (which I think was $7) but was pleasantly surprised to find them on sale. I probably won't put them all in that one small pot, but just wanted to mention that the tubers seemed fairly large and healthy. The only downside is limited color selection and none of the tubers were of the "hanging/pendula" variety, thus I also had to visit walmart yesterday (whose bulbs were healthy but smaller, but I know from past experience they grow pretty quick anyways).

Glen

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Glen, I got one of those kits last year when they were on sale for $2. I didn't use the pot and dirt that came with it....I figured it was too small. However the tubers did very well, planted up properly. I should go check and see if they are on sale here again.

Sierra

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I bought 2 University of Saskatchewan Lily bulbs at Garden scape and found an overwintered 4 inch pot of Bowles Variety Myrtle so it was a great weekend for spring 2007 "acquisitions"

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I added two more white lilies. Asiatic hybrid 'Alpi'.

Sierra ;-)

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Lucky you Fern, how much were they asking for those U of S Lily bulbs?

Sharon

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I'm planning to go to the Olds College open house on Saturday and see what I can get from their plant sale. I remember someone on here went last year, and got some great stuff at great prices. I need to remember to call my SIL and see if she wants to join me.
Connie

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Sharon,

The bulbs were $10.00 and they were selling plants for $20.00 or few smaller plants for $10.00. The plants were tempting but luckily there were some practical people in line who suggested that they wouldn't be in bloom during the summer if they bloomed inside in a week or so : so I got bulbs to plant

Fern

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I finally got out a bit to do some shopping and picked up a bag of 40 bulbs of Tigridia for $14.95 at Home Depot. They are 20 for $15.95 at Botanus. My SIL had these in, where else, Vancouver, last year and they are so pretty. So, another one to lift in the fall but I couldn't resist.

Shauna

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Unfortunately, though I am longing to do so, I haven't done much with respect to my garden yet this year. Certainly, a major part of that is that we have decided to do our part to help combat global warming and have made a great start at the great Newfoundland glacier. I am thoroughly convinced that it will never stop snowing and that the temperature will never get above plus one or two.

Anyway, if it ever does seem that I will be able to get into my garden, I hope to be able to add a Morden Blush and Parfum De L'Haye rose, as well as a couple more irises (I have absolutely fallen in love with them and try to add one or two each year), as well a couple additional prennials, including purple coneflower, oriental poppies, hollyhocks, butterfly weed, white delphinium and a couple daylilies.

Caleb

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Silly beginners question. If I picked up some bulbs now..what would I do with them to store them until they can be planted in the ground?

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

It depends on what you buy. You could store them in the fridge or you could plant them in pots and get them going ahead of time. I have a couple of Oriental lily bulbs that i'll be planting soon, possibly later today.

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Finally, I'm seeing little pink eyes coming up from Caladiums, these buggers take a while to come up, eh.

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I walked into our MacLeod's on Thursday - and they had their box roses in. I walked out with John Cabot, Alexander Mackenzie, and Morden Ruby. They're just starting to sprout, so I figured I could plant them out - but the ground is still solid 6" down, so into pots for now.
Old College's plant sale was well worth it. I picked up thymus "elfin", a creeping jenny, a tiny bergenia "Bressingham Ruby", veronica incana siberese, valerian officianalis, hypercum perforatum, anenome sylvestris, heuchera "Palace Purple", heuchera "Ruby Bells", saliva "Purple Volcano", a variegated dogwood, and a big unnamed hosta - limegreen with yellow/cream edges - all for $31.00. I'm trying to convince myself now that I really don't need to buy any more plants - well, except for a few more roses, and maybe some irises...
Connie

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Wow, Connie, that was a great shopping trip you had! That's quite a few plants for only $31.

I also had a wonderful shopping day today too. I popped into walmart and they had some Windmill brand roses in those square containers for $8.97. And I couldn't believe my luck......they actually had some Double Delight roses! Last year, I looked and looked for DD, but no luck. They also had a good selection of hardy roses and they were own root too. Do you think they've finally heard us complaining?!lol

My day was made complete when I found a pack of 2 bulbs of 'Landini' lilies at superstore for $3.99. So as long as my rose and lilies weren't mislabelled, and they grow, I'll be one happy camper! :0)

Laurie

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

There were some bodybag roses at Walmart last weekend but nothing i was excited about - and i looked, believe me! LOL

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

The other weekend I picked up Martin Frobisher rose at Wally World. Then I went to one of the greenhouses and picked up OT Altari, Red Hot and Touching lilies. And a couple Oriental Dizzy lilies. They were on sale for $3.50 so I couldn't resist.

That's it for now...I keep telling myself.

Shelley

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Oh Shelley, you'll love 'Altari'. The flowers are huge! I ordered 'Red Hot' for my MIL, so I hope she'll like it.

Marcia, I was expecting to see the bodybags, but was very happy to see these roses actually in a pot. I would hope they'd do better than the bodybag type as the roots wouldn't have to be trimmed quite as much.......but ya never know.

I'm a little nervous about the Landini lilies that I potted up yesterday, as they were a bit soft. I'll keep my fingers crossed that they make it.

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Laurie,You've obviously have OT lilies in your garden. Do you find them reliable to come back?
My lilies were on the soft side as well. The supplier was not the best this year. I potted them up when I brought them home and 3 are just sitting. The other 6 are sending up stems. Of course 2 of the sitting ones are Altari. I do have one coming up though.

Just checked on the 3 of them and one is starting to root. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXFingersXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Shelley

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Shelley, I'm pretty new to orienpets too. But I've had 'Boogie Woogie' over-winter very well twice now. Because of this success, I had planted two more last spring, with Altari being one of them and Red Dutch was the other. I've got a few more on order this spring too, so I'm hoping for the same good results.

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Different Walmarts must have different things they can order. Ours seldom has any variety. Perennials come in once or twice, but there are mostly annuals and roses. They used to have shrubs but i don't remember seeing many in the past couple of years. And the perennials are only in 4 inch pots, nothing larger.

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

It was only $3.97.... Normally i'm not a fan of "annual" roses, but what the heck? Today i bought the Hybrid Tea "Oregold" at Walmart and planted it in a large container. Thing is, i have another container exactly the same, so it probably needs another rose, eh? :>

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

You know what you need to do then Marcia.
Yesterday my SIL brought me a couple of the University of Saskatchewan lilies. I had asked her to look for them while she was at Gardenscape. Looks like they are going to be very pretty.
Laurie how are your Landini bulbs looking? Anything coming yet. I had another Altari pop up and the other 2 bulbs have firmed up and are starting to root. Crossing fingers does help.

Shelley

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Marcia, walmarts must carry different things, because the one here doesn't have any roses for $3.97. Only the potted Windmill brand for $8.97, but maybe they'll get the cheaper ones in later. I'm still on the look out for HT 'Voodoo', so maybe one of these years I'll stumble across one. And yes, you should get a partner for 'Oregold', or else he'll be lonely!;^)

Oh Shelley, that's good news about your lilies! My Landini still aren't showing any growth, but I'll keep crossing my fingers until they do.

Did anybody else pick up the Trillium grandiflorum, and how are they doing? The one bulb in my package already had a shoot coming, but a few days after I potted them up, it dried up and there's no sign of new growth coming.:( I don't know if I should go and spend another $7 on another pack if they won't grow again. Hmmmm...what to do?

Last week I also picked up hostas 'Patriot' and 'Wide Brim' at walmart. They had some pretty good growth happening in the package, although it was sickly white. But after a few days under the lights, they've got some really nice colour to the leaves now.

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Well, I drove to the Lloydminster Wal-Mart today and they too were selling the $6.98 bags of Yellow & White trilliums, but I put them back, I opened a few bags and they were dry as sawdust. I'll see if Holes sells the yellow or red kind.

I did buy a blue gazing glass globe for my stand thou ;)

Sharon

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I bought a peony (Bowl of Beauty) and a Canna (Cleopatra) at HD the other day. The canna looks like it will grow no problem, but the peony, which was supposed to contain one root, contained two and one was moldy. Hope the other will grow.

Sharon I picked up a bag of trilliums at Walmart and it felt empty. I put it back too. >:0(

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I picked up the following this week....
Rockery, Sparaxis rainbow mix
Peacock Orchid Acidanthera
Hosta "Christmas Tree"
Hosta "Patriot"
Oriental lily "Marco Polo" 1 bulb but it was HUGE..Two large stems starting out the top...and two smaller ones starting out the side.

DH asked me were I was planning to plant all this stuff....I just laughed at him. Oh btw, there is a small area by the fence that needs a NEW FLOWER BED dug. LOL!!!!

As for my trilliums, One is growing well.....the other....Hmmmm...it didn't pop up when the first one did and I left it on the heat matt......then forgot about it and it dried out completely. I found it yesterday....so watered it LOL.....but I don't hold out any hope that it will grow now.

Gill when you buy bare roots or bulbs....if there is mold on them, just dip in a solution of bleach and warm water. If it is so moldy its rotten or mushy, then its too late, obviously.

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

My alstromeria purchase today (see that thread) led to my checking out the new coleus. I was good and just picked up two, Religious Raddish and Tuckerman's Ravine). And, then that led to the new plectranthus, Frosted Jade. Then I just had to get out of there!

Of course on the way home I stopped by Canadian Tire and picked up a bag of iris holandicum (bulbous) and one of Anemones. Then to Lindenberg's where I bought two more Canas, Brown Sugar and Cleopatra.

Oh yeah, spring is most definitely here!!!

I'm a bit warmer here, so I've been "hunting" for a while! Still can barely plant out becuase it thaws, sn**s, melts, brr's again. But I found a Joseph coat rose I can put up against the foundation south side, a whole bunch of lilies (sterling on order too) at our home and garden show, and purple poppy seeds for the alley.

Then today my mother corrupted me at wally world and I invested in the shady north side beds- 3 bleeding heart, 8 hosta, 2 astilbe (a gift from mom- that just got me started), 15 lily of the valley for that bottomless pit of a north side bed that dwarfs everything (even ferns feel like they've been shut in a dark hole back there!) So I had to trhow in a little bit of bak and mulch to redo the path through the front bed and to mulch all my new plants, and, well....

OH I can't forget, before today I acquired a bunch of rasberries to add to the ones I'm moving for a hedge of them, and enough seed to completely overrun my sunroom. OOH boy, I LOVE SPRING!

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I did get another rose at Walmart today. A red floribunda. Do you think i can remember the name right now? I can't go and look either because my cat is weighing me down....

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

It's 'Show Biz' - nice reddish foliage so far.

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

My DH has been going to Humboldt a couple times a week for physiotherapy. He has brought me home 7 plants from the local Co-op the last few months. What's up with that? They are always healthy too. Bonus.

Hope you had a happy Anniversary Gill.

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

So far this year we have:

3 colours of trillium, white, yellow and red. All are up in their pots. ( 1 bought at Sunnyside, 1 at Rona and one at Walmart).

Sunnyside had pots of non-stop begonias on sale for 50cents so we bought a flat.

We bought 2 flats of clearance pansies at Walmart. These are now in planters in the garden.

A one dollar martagon is about 2 inches high...we'll plant it out in a week or so.

Overall we've been quite restrained this year. Almost nowhere to shoe-horn in more perennials. We planted another 100 or so bulb packs last fall but still have some gaps. I have to learn to review spring photos to see the gaps which are filled later in the season by bigger perennials.

I almost bought a flat of mimulus (monkey flowers) from Walmart but resisted. They are one annual that seems either in large supply or almost none each year. They are among our favorites and we have a few planters dedicated to them.

On the hard stuff side we purchased another dozen pots at Sunnyside at incredibly low prices...two lights for a seed grower...and a pack of popsicle sticks for markers. We have dozens of bags of potting soil bought at Liquidation World over the winter but I'll regret I didnnt get more.

I sure wish we had more room for roses and clematis. Need to feed the addiction. Think I'll pop over to Canadian tire and look at their 'stuff'.

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I just found a plant that I have been coveting thanks to Doris, I think, for a couple of years. I am so excited. Sanguinaria canadensis `Multiplex' Double Bloodroot. It's just coming into bloom. Pretty, pretty white double flowers - sort of remind me of a small lotus. That's one thing that this forum sure does for us is covet, isn't it? But I sure like being able to go into the garden centres at this time of year and be able to find some of these rarities. It was a bit pricey, but hopefully, pocket gophers don't like bloodroot.

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I was totally surprised to see a 6"(?) pot of Hellebore in full bloom for sale along with all the blue Hydrangea & pots of daff's at Sobey's a couple weeks ago. Thought that was a very strange plant to be selling as a potted flowering (throw away...) plant. I was incredibly tempted to pick it up but took a deep breath, shook my head and purposefully walked away. I just hope whoever snapped it up knew what they were getting and treat it accordingly!

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Shauna , Dh would love to do that. He doesn't seem to hear me now. Hockey is on all the time. Now I understand what the plants were for. To keep me in a good mood before playoffs start.

"I was totally surprised to see a 6"(?) pot of Hellebore in full bloom for sale along with all the blue Hydrangea..."

Every year seems to have some less common plants that flood the market. This year I've seen these Hellebores everywhere. There's also a flood of phormiums at a few stores for a third of their former prices.

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

In Saskatoon yesterday, I picked up a tray of bedding plants as well as a Raspberry Ice Bougainvillea Vine.
I hope that I can keep this baby alive. But it shouldn't be that hard, it likes it's soil to be kept on the dry side. Perfect.

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

OMG Shelley, that is sooooo pretty! The leaves look like a variegated ficus. I really need to get down to the nursery and see what there is. I haven't been motivated to do much garden planning with spring being so late.

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

So, will you plan on keeping a cutting or two of the bougainvillea vine over for the winter? I love the coloring of the bracts on your Raspberry Ice!

Reminds me of when we were in Cuba a few years ago. At the resort where we stayed there were some very mature bougainvillea vines that just covered the whole parking area in front of the resort. They were a dark reddish purple color. Just gorgeous!

I tried years ago overwintering a Bougainvillea indoors for the winter with no luck, but it wouldn't hurt to try again.

Good luck with yours.

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

YEAH!! I *finally* got to join in on the fun!!
Costco (Red Deer) opened it's greenhouse today, and DH took me shopping.

I picked up:
Crabapple "Royalty" - bronze/red leaves, pink/purple flowers
Apple "Norland" - all their fruit trees are $28/ea.
3 Martha Washington geraniums "Ballet" " Imperial" & "Elegance Rose Bicolor" - all 3/$12
Petunia "Red Morn Madness" - 36/flat
Impatiens "Super Elfin Blue Pearl" - 36/flat
Lobelia "Saphire" - 36/flat (All the flats were $10/ea)

Then we went to Home Depot:
Crabapple "Dolgo" (for making jelly) @ $36
And Saturday I popped into:

Co-op H&G and got:
Lysimachia "Goldilocks"
Brachyscome "Blue Zephyr"
Osteospermum "Orange Symphony"
Ivy Geranium "Red Peppermint"

Home Depot:
Red/Yellow/Green Peppers
Chili Pepper
Jalapeno "Mucho Nacho"

Walmart:
Calibrachoa "White Imp" & "Rose"

Fortunately all three trees are used to being outside. My sun room is full to bursting at night, but my greenhouse has lots of room to spare during the day (and once it warms up for the nights) ;o) I'm hoping that happens soon, because as soon as I have to transplant my latest bunch - four flats - of seedlings into their own pots I'm going to be in a heap of trouble!! (My zinnias have sprouted in three days!)

Oh so fun though!!

Thanks Shelly "Enabler" ;o) I may have to pick up one or two more plants yet this spring...that Bougainvillea is very pretty, I'd love to try it if I can find one!

Verena

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Verena beat me to it. The Costco garden center opened here yesterday too. I was good though.....although DH was rolling his eyes. LOL!!!! I only bought...

1 rhodo
1 SDB iris
1 jacobs ladder.

Now where am I going to put that rhodo for best chance of survival....hmmmmmmmm.

Oh Verena, if you keep going back to the Costco garden center...they get new things in quite often. I think my Dh was looking for the planters that I got last year with the osteos in.....they were gorgeous....he did mention that they didn't have them....so.....hopefully they will come in soon. They did have some beautiful begonias...but I pried my little fingers off them and slowly, begrudgingly walked away.haha!

Sierra

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Sierra, you'll have to come to Red Deer ;o) They have the big beautiful planters full of osteos here...several different varieties...I didn't grab one (or five), but since it's only a 6 minute drive to Costco from here.... :o)

Verena

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Verena, it's too bad you didn't live a little closer to me. I have 3 mature Dolgo trees in my yard. You could come over and pick all the apples and make all the jelly/juice that your little heart desires.

Brenda

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Today I picked up 7 own root roses from Walmart. 3 morden sunrise, 3 winnepeg parks and 1 Aidelaide Hoodless. They had some others that I want, but I'm not sure how much room I have in my front window to baby these until they are ready to plant out. It may be simpler for the rest to wait a couple weeks and then plant them straight away.
I think I need to take a trip to Costco to see what I might like! I have no touble finding everything I want at Costco - in fact I even met my husband there!
Janet

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Brenda, if you come help me out, I'll help you.

I wish that I lived closer to some of you girls. It would be fun. Well, at least we have internet.

Shelley

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Sure, Shelley, I will just make the "10 minute" drive northwest and come help you out.

Wouldn't it be great if we in the FN could all live a little closer to each other? Not so sure what our DH's would think. But the internet sure makes the world that we live in a lot smaller.

Janet, you are going to love your Winnipeg Parks rose. That is the one everyone comments on when they come into my yard. It is a short red rose and always makes it through our cold winters without protection of any kind.

Forgot 2 more acquisitions ... from Laurie...thanks!..in our trading...I got a Matt daylily and an Azure Skies Iris.

Brenda

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

"in fact I even met my husband there"

Wow Janet, that really is one stop shopping at Costco!LOL Yes, I'm sure you'll love all 3 of your new roses.

So that's what you ordered from the Lily Nook Brenda. I kept forgetting to ask you. You will have a lot of digging to do, won't you? You're welcome for the iris and daylily. I hope you like the iris because that's the only one that I'll be able to give you, as I've pretty much gotten all the ones I have from you! And thanks for Barbara Mitchell. She'll have to get potted up today. Btw, DH wasn't sure if he should look in the bag or not, since you had put the initials "BM" on it.;^)

I don't think that I had mentioned on this thread that I had picked up a mandevilla vine 'Red Velvet' from the Greenspot for $3.99. Also from the Greenspot I picked up $1.50 plugs of:

-Large leaf (can't remember the Latin name for it)
-2 annual vinca vines (was able to split them into 4 individual plants)
-Bacopa (was able to root 3 cuttings, so now have 4 individual plants too)
-Potato vine (one green, one purple)
-Another yellow leafed vine, I think it's a lychnis, or something like that? That's the downside to plugs, you don't get a tag with it, but the price makes up for it.

Also at the Neepawa Hort day, I picked up Heuchera 'Amethyst Myst' and Euphorbia 'Diamond Frost'. The euphorbia is supposed to be excellent for hot, dry conditions, so it should do well for a sunny container.

I also got my Lily Nook order in. I got:

Blackout
Jive
Navarra
Ice Diamond
Elegant Crown
Visa Versa
Urandi
Zagora
Triumphator
L. cernuum album

I noticed on Sunday that Home Depot was starting to put out some perennials and shrubs into their greenhouse, so I'm sure that the rest of the box stores will be doing the same very soon. :0)

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I'll help you plant your lilies Brenda.....then you can come help me plant the 100 or so that I have to plant.;) Oh ya...we will have to do the mouse be GONE, dance around my lilies. I will post some pics of what my lilies look like this spring is a bit.

The SDB iris was labeled mix....but this one was blooming. It is yellow and different from the yellow that I already have. It also has the most beautiful fragrance.

Sierra

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Wow, Laurie, $3.99 for a Mandevilla is fantastic. I also picked up a 'Red Velvet' on Sunday from Parkland in Red Deer (road trip) but I paid $9.99 for it. I thought I was getting a deal because they are about $15 wherever else i have seen them.

I picked up 2 Priscilla® petunias and managed to take 24 cuttings off of them. Certainly the much more economical way of getting a flat of those types of plants.

Shauna

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Shauna these mandevillas were only in 2" pots, but I'm sure once they get potted into something larger the price will go up. Brenda did some research on them and found out that they are supposed to be easy to take cuttings from. That's always a good thing.;^)

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Ha northspruce, definately...I will hand them out as you all come though the gate. LOL! along with mousetraps. :O Boogie Woogie..do the mouse be gone dance....

You know it was funny, (well not really) the other day when I was out trying to take pics of the wee bulbs....I was laying on the ground and thinking...what if a mouse pops out...would I whack it with my camera. LOL NO!!!! Then I got thinking of all the mouse poop that was on the ground.....eeewww. So I didn't get very many good pics.

Savona, my greenhouse is completely empty....I'm afraid to put anything in there right now....better to be safe than sorry. You can't get though my laundry room though.....oh well...guess I don't have to do laundry for a while...JOKING LOL!

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Sierra,

Sorry, I can't help you. I have over 30 different irises that have yellow of some sort in it. But none of them matched perfectly with yours. The beard was the wrong color or mine was more of a gold or had no edge of white around the falls.

My Baby Blessed I think is the closest to your iris. Although, it does not have the white markings down the side of the falls like yours does but it in the same shade of yellow yours is.

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Shauna, some time when you're making a road trip to Red Deer, you'll have to stop in for a cup of coffee, and give me a lesson on petunia cuttings. (I did my first geranium cuttings this year, with help from my neighbor, but I think she starts her petunias from seed (and since I ended up with a 0% germination on my 2 packets of wave petunia seed, I think I'd rather try taking some slips.)

Verena

How is your Landini doing Laurie? All of mine dried up bulbs that I purchased earlier are up.

Shelley

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Shelley, when all of those lilies start blooming, you're going to be the talk of the neighborhood! As for my Landinis, one does have some growth coming on it. The other one may have a little bit coming, but it's hard to tell yet. I'm patiently waiting for signs of life from all the lilies that I planted last year. Most of the ones that I've had for awhile have shoots coming, just the newbies are the slow pokes.

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Just got back from my annual around-this-time-of-year trip to Thunder Bay, and i was remarkably restrained! Part of the reason was that there were going to be four of us coming back and room would be at a premium - and it was!

I bought a hanging basket in a light sage-y green, two yellow nemesias that i couldn't find here last year, a yellow iris rhizome (can't remember the name right now) and some seeds. That's it! :) Gale gave me a kind of rice grass, a castor bean and a container of plants she says are called "Jewels of Opar". We had a good time visiting the nurseries, but there were not a lot of enticing blooms in either one. Funny how some years are light that.

But i'm all hepped up to get to our local nurseries and clean them out of callibroacha! LOL

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I've never grown Jewels of Opar, I'm going to have to try some from seed if you collect some this fall Marcia ;)

I really don't need much to buy this year, everything I've got so far has been ordered thru mail orders, saved from last year or I have started from seed. I'll probably wait till Mothers Day and pick up a Fuchsia basket and I'm thinking of buying a Weeping Birch, will see ;)

Oops had to come back and add more stuff. I had Monday off for a chagne and thought the nurseries would be less busy, as the weekedn had neared 75F and yards are being worked all over! Boy was I wrong! Well, I left with honeysuckle vine for out front, clematis and lupine for a new bed, and alot of creeping phlox and mother of thyme for a rock garden boulevard. Also new lattice to build a "fence" and lots of landscape timbers to surround the new beds up the entry way

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Marcia, you mention not a lot of enticing blooms in the nurseries.

I'm the opposite. I'm always looking for plants this time of year not in bloom and not about to bloom. What entices me are good strong plants that will bloom when they usually do in our area and not coaxed into early bloom in the greenhouse they were grown in.

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I understand, Greenstar, but you must be stronger than me! :) I'm a real sucker for blooming flowers.

Yesterday i received begonia tubers from Vesey's and today the rest of the order came:
Egret flowers
Dwarf Oriental lily mix (planted in a container)
Tradescantia mix
Geranium Birch's Double
Hemerocallis Thundering Ovation
Echinacea Sunset
Ferns - Ostrich, Cinnamon, Christmas, Maiden Hair

Most of the plants were pretty good-looking. Only the Maiden Hair fern had no growth coming from the roots.

Everything is potted up and in the cold frame with an extra tarp over it. There's just no more room inside. And there's still Dominion and Botanus to come - Breck's too, i think. The joys of addiction! LOL

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I found my Persain Shield.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

And I picked up 4 of Lysimachia congestiflora to put into pots. I thought the colour would be nice mixed in with wave petunias.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I also picked up a Rock Star iris and a Summer Wine Ninebark.

Shelley

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Shelley, have you grown that Lysimachia in full sun before? I picked up a plug of it, so of course I didn't get a tag with it. I thought it would be more of a shade plant, but maybe it'd do better in sun?

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Laurie the tag on the Lysimachia says full to part sun. It'll grow 10-12" tall with a 12" spread.
I haven't grown it before. I'm hoping that it tolerates frost.

Shelley

 o
RE: thanks

Thanks Shelley. It sure is an eye catching plant isn't it? Mine's actually got a couple of canary yellow flowers on it now......it'll definitely show up well in a container!

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Got more stuff - I planted my Vesey's order last week - 4 hardy phlox, 3 Monte Negro Asiatic lilies, 4 mixed hosta, 2 Black Barlow aquilegia, 2 Virginia blue bells, 4 mixed ferns. I had ordered with one of their $25 off coupons. On our nice rainy Friday I drove to a local nursery, and got my first Alstroemeria - Anouska - for $8.99, an apple mint, Beacon Silver lamium, and a few annuals. On Saturday we headed for Red Deer. Innisfail Co-op had little perennials in really nice shape - 5 for $12 - so I bought 2 gypsophilia repens "rosea", Rotgold helenium,
Sherwood Purple creeping phlox, and Sunray coreopsis. At Parkland Nurseries, I spent my $50 gift certificate from my aunt, and bought Prince of Wales juniper, Emerald cedar, and Royal Burgundy berberis. I also picked up Morden Bell rose, which I've really wanted, for Mother's Day. I had a great plant weekend. Our PFRA tree order came last week, so yesterday we planted 26 sea buckthorn, 25 villosa lilacs, 25 green ash, and 10 acute willow cuttings. Spring is really, finally here!
Connie

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Connie, you will like your Morden Belle rose. I love its hot pink flowers with its glossy foliage. It's a nice Mother's Day gift for yourself!

Mother's Day and my birthday in June are two great excuses to purchase something for myself. I have done the same thing!

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Today i recieved my Botanus order. I planted the two Dianthus 'Firewitch' near my little pond and added the Alyssum 'Basket of Gold' to the same area. I potted up the two ligularia and planted the free Stella D'Oro daylily - had to move a couple of heuchera to do it, but i wanted to move them anyway. I got some Madame de Paris glads but haven't planted them yet because i need to add a bit of soil to the area where they'll go.

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Marcia, you'll love 'Firewitch', I bought one last year and it has spread quite a bit.

Today I went plant shopping,

first I checked out our new Wal-Mart in town, oh my, somebody is not looking after the plants. All their annuals were either frost bitten or dry, dry, dry, it was so pitiful that I walked out disgusted.

I then went over to a local greenhouse just out of town, she's expensive but at least they have a healthy selection and they look after their plants.

I bought....

Bacopa ‘Snowstorm Giant Snowflake’ (2)
Begona ‘Non-Stop Pink’
Bidens ferulifolia ‘Solaire Yellow’
Euphorbia amygdaloidal ‘Efanthia’ (hopefully it will be a perennial here)
Impatiens Encore Wine (3)
Lobelia Trailing Sapphire (4)
Petunia Supertunia Double Peppermint (2)(7cuttings)
Portulaca Margarita Rosita (2)
Verbena ‘Superbena Dark Blue’ (2)

Here's the flower of the Peppermint Petunia, I just love it, took some cuttings as well (don't worry Petunia police, I will not sell them) ;)

I love that, Sharon. Those would look phenomenal in my herb pot. But I think I'll be sticking with 'Priscilla'. They did so well last year in the front planter and I want some in there and then the herb pot filled with them, to tie things together at the front. I've got 24 very healthy cuttings done and they want to flower so bad already but I'm not letting them. Nope, they need to get more roots first. I think I'm going to do the purple, yellow and orange theme again.

I bought a Passiflora 'Lady Margaret' and a Hibiscus 'Luna Red' a couple of days ago. I'm really looking forward to the Passion flower blooming. It's got 17 flower buds on it already and it's about 2' high. This year, they will get no iron chelate, though, no matter if they get chlorotic or not. Just slow release.

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Yay, I can join the fun here finally!

WOW Sharon, that petunia is gorgeous.

DH bought me an early Mothers Day gift today -- a Morden Belle (Parkland Series) Rose Bush. I already know where it's going to go! He did good hey? Considering he bought it all by himself! 8^)

Plus I did a favour for a friend earlier this week and she brought me a flat of all sorts of annuals -- Geraniums, Verbena 'Burgundy', Nemesia 'Sunsatia Banana', Licorice plant, Silver Nettle Vine, and Argyranthemum 'Vanilla Butterfly'. I was totally floored and not expecting that at all --- but they are awesome! 8^)

I've been working for the past couple weeks for a friend who just had a baby so I haven't had much time for browsing the nurseries but once she comes back I'll hopefully find some good deals (OK, yeah, less choices probably though -- LOL) I can't believe it's already 'planting out weekend' already next weekend. Time has sure flown!

I think this board is full of enablers. This thread is evidence!

Anyway, my mother's day present was 3 hours alone, 3 nurseries, and buying for the new walkway flower beds. Ok that's not all I bought, but still..

Huechera, some pretty purple trailing clover, tatting fern and interrupted fern for one of the north beds.

Creeping thyme and blue falx for the "boulevard" rock garden.

Peppers and a couple extra tomato plants I didn't start from seed for the veggie garden.

Oh yeah, the reason for shopping: several lupine and columbine and 2 cranesbill geranium for the walkway beds.

I have also acquired in the last couple weeks lots of summery bulbs- acidanthera, tritelia, etc, several different lilies and glads, two comtesse something or other clematis, a honeysuckle vine, a new trellis for the clematis- well you all get the idea!

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

My oldest DS and I went for our grad haircuts on Wednesday, and I picked up a Winnipeg Parks rose and a dwarf Alberta spruce - it's really cute. For my Mother's Day treat, I stopped at a Home Hardware and picked up wooly thyme (finally - I've been searching for ages) and a couple more lamium. I also grabbed a red mum, an iris whose name escapes me, meadow sweet, and a purple-leaved plant at our little local green house - Jim always has a really nice selection of perennials. I think it's time to quit - unless I get to go someplace else and check stuff out of course!

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Yesterday, at a yard sale, I picked up heuchera Pulchella and L.O. lily 'Queen's Promise'. Then went to a greenhouse and picked up hosta 'Revolution' and Torenia 'Golden Moon', which is a very striking yellow flower with a purple throat and the back of the flower is purple as well. Here's a link to a picture of it, but it's much more striking in person. I just love it! Does anyone know how well torenia does in the house for the winter? And can you take cuttings?

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Laurie,

if you google 'torenia cutting' there is a lot of people who take cuttings and also keep it over winter as a houseplant. I wonder if you would want to put it under your lights though? What pretty colors it has and very eye catching!

Heuchera pulchella is apparently an extremely small heuchera but hardy to zone 3. I would love to see it in person.

Brenda, I'm sure you'll see the heuchera and the torenia in person soon.;^) That's great to know that the torenia does well with taking cuttings. Thanks.

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I just picked up a gallon size Iris ensata 'Royal Banner' Japanese Iris at Extra Foods for $4.94!
I'm so happy about this find as I have never grown this kind of Iris before. I'll probably grow it in a pot and overwinter it down in the pumphouse for the winter.

I'm still waiting for their other pots of perennials/ shrubs to go down next week. There's a cutleaf golden cut-leaf Elder reduced down to $13, but I'm going to wait to see if it goes down some more ;)

Any new deals you have found lately?

Sharon

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Well, I went back to Extra Foods today and thank goodness I did, there was only one Sambucus racemosa ‘Sutherland’ Golden Cutleaf Elder left, so I bought it instead of waiting for next week.

I also picked up a gallon Prunus x cistena Purpleleaf Sandcherry for sale price of $6.94 ;)

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

I picked up the hosta 'Honey Bells' at Canadian Tire for $9.97 (gallon pot).

I have enough plants now. I won't acquire any more.

:>

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Marcia, I have 'Honey Bells' hosta also. I like the large shiny green leaves on it.

Last week I went shopping at Lindenberg's. In store they are clearing out their perennials at 40% off.

So, I bought...

Supreme Sultan TB iris... $2.39 regularly $3.99.

American Halo, Fair Maiden, Sleeping Beauty and Sea Lotus Leaf Hostas all $3.29 each instead of $5.49.

First Frost, Summer Breeze and Great Arrival Hostas all $5.09 instead of $8.49.

Monarch's Velvet Potentilla followed me home also for $2.99 instead of $4.99.

I also picked up some Japanese peonies for $10.19 instead of $16.99. I bought Kukenu Jishia, Bride's Dream and Glowing Candles.

The herbacious peonies I bought were Springfield, Eden's Perfume, Kansas, Laura Desert, Tom Eckhart, Pink Cameo and Edulis Superba. They were reg $6.99 and I paid $4.19.

Daylilies...I will plant and hope that they are true...if not then I may just have to give them away or sell really cheap. I bought Black Stockings, Fire and Fog and Moroccan Sunrise all regularly $7.99 and now on for $4.79. The daylilies that were regularly $5.99 and on for $3.59 that I picked up were Edge of Darkness, Cherry Valentine, Canadian Border Patrol, Paige Pinata and Daring Deception.

Each year I go and get stuff at their clearance sale. Sure is a lot cheaper. They are bare root so I just plant them up immediately and they do fine.

Thank goodness perennials can grow in a pot until I have time to plant them. I have done some cleaning through the beds and found a few spaces already and the rest are going to be placed in my new walking garden where the old holding garden used to be.

Brenda

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Brenda, you sure got some good deals!

 o
RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Sharon, I know re: good deals! I was googling some of the hostas and they are like $21US each. The peonies were somewhere around $25 for the herbacious.

The daylilies will be a great deal...if...they are correct when they bloom.

Brenda

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Brenda, will you ever get everything planted? You bought some things that I was thinking about purchasing from their catalouge. You sure did get some great deals.

RE: Spring 2007 Acquisitions

Well DH added two more roses to the list this year...A J.P. Grootendorst and a George Vancouver. :o) Apparently DH really likes roses, and wants to have more...who am I to complain?? Peavy Mart has most of their plants on at 1/2 off, and the roses are $10 for the 2gal. ones and $8 something for the 1gal. so I and then they gave me some other discount that ended up knocking off an additional $8, so I basically got the 1gal Grootendorst for free!! :o)
