Same process with most all ornamental grasses, Marie.

One year over winter mice ate my Blue Oat grass right at ground level. I thought it was a gonner, for sure, but that year it grew better than ever. Since then I always kinda hope that some mice will come along and do at least some of the work for me - cutting back ornamental grasses can be really hard work!

Thanks Sharon. I wasn't sure if I should be worried about the new growth. So if I understand you correctly, I just cut the clumps off at ground level?

Some kind of rodent ate a lot of the lawn in the area, but the clumps of ornamental grass look unaffected. Perhaps lawn is a delicacy to them?

Cut a couple inches up from the ground - the mice might know what they're doing at ground level but I usually take a slightly safer approach.

I've got to tackle a big clump of Spartina pectinata very soon - that's one tough grass.

For Carl Foester grass, before the new growth begins in earnest I throw a match into the old clump of grass. The flames are huge, probably reach 8 feet high, but burn out within a minute or two. Safety first, check your local regulations, have a hose ready, and don't do it if there are flammable things nearby like a pine tree or a fence, etc. It's fun as all get out, and the black ash soaks up the sun so new growth doesn't take long.
