Hi Janet - I started mine this year in about two inches of soil in a dish pan. They are now at least 10 inches tall and growing well. I just added soil to cover the bulbs about 3 inches and will plant them out about the second week in May. Maybe you could do the same with your water started ones. I know they don't like to sit in water to long. Maybe?

Janet, The water method is fiddly and takes a lot of time and fuss. What I do is fill the single cell, cell packs and place 2 glads in each cell. No fuss and no extra work. If the roots heave out of the soil, gently push back in, until plant out time. At plant out time pull the glads apart and plant a good 6 inches deep. Easy.

I would pot up like Ginny has suggested at this point. At this point it is an extra step, but since you already started them in water.....what else can you do.

Well I planted them into cells, but they will not be very deeply covered. This year I guess will be a trial to see how well starting them early works for me. I will see how much the soil warms up to see when I will plant them out. My neighbor planted hers about 2 weeks before mine last year - but they were against her house where it is much warmer, I just don't want to go to all the work of planting them just to have them rot.
