30 degree days and frozen ground!

I was digging holes for my tomato plants today and nearly lost my little spade in what seemed to be an old gopher burrow. Just out of curiosity, I pushed a stake in to see how deep it would go. At the four-foot depth, I hit solid ICE! I tried this in another burrow and encountered the same result. This is in central SK. In the news, I read that the city of Winnipeg expects the ground to be frozen at the 10 ft depth into late June.

Maybe that's why my hostas are barely up.

Anyone's clematises showing signs of life yet? I'm thinking I may have lost them this winter.

I think it's still early Donna. Last year my Ville de Lyon was really late, but eventually did come up and bloomed, though not as nice as usual.
Today, on my walkabout, I was delighted to see my new Jackmanii has sprouted. Of course Bluebird and Alpina Ruby are fine and have seeded themselves everywhere.
