Good standards/top-grafted shrubs?

I live on a corner lot that has a fairly narrow front yard. I'm hoping someone can recommend a standard that they know to perform well in central Alberta. I'm pretty familiar with many of the varieties offered at local garden centers, but I haven't seen many of them actually planted anywhere so I have no way to evaluate which ones will perform well. I've seen plenty of top-grafted caraganas apparently thriving, but I can't say I'm really fond of them. The house faces west and the location receives sun through most of the day, the site will be protected from the northern winds, the soil is mostly clay, but it is well drained due to a bit of a slope.
