That's great, Marie! I see no sign of my fernleaf bleeding heart this year, or the white one, and my old-fashioned one is just starting to put out a bit of growth and it doesn't look very good.

There are a lot of things that aren't showing signs of life. Neither of the two euonymous bushes are putting out leaves, my new Kyushi hydrangea looks the same, and even Martin Frobisher doesn't look too good. Some heat is forecast starting next week, so we'll see if anything pops.

Hooray! I've yet to successfully get one to live! I've stopped buying them (it just seems cruel :))

One of the reasons I was so surprised to see this tiny plant appear, was the fact that 2 of my well established bleeding hearts haven't come up yet. But another one is about 10 inches tall. It's confusing.
Curls, I guess you're telling me not to get too attached to this plant, lol.

Marie, what kind of places are you planting your bleeding hearts in? I had no luck my original old fashioned one, but I would like to try again. I have two white ones that don't get very big but have been coming back every year in part shade albeit they come up so late I think they're dead every spring...lol. Just curious where you plant yours since we're in the same zone. I'm hesitant to try the old fashioned one again.

I planted a Goldheart a couple years ago and it seems to be doing quite well. This year it seemed to emerge too early because parts of it are showing damage from continuing snow and frost.

I too am actually in zone 1b in the Canadian system, but I can't bear to have that on every post. There's an old-fashioned bleeding heart here that was here when I moved in last year. It appears to be very well-established and large. It's planted on the east side of my porch, where it receives extra water from the porch roof, and probably 4-5 hours of early morning sun. It is backed by a large rock and the roots are shaded from the later morning sun by a low deck. I hope that helps.
