Good Plan for Tomatoes?

So, is there any reason not to do this, or is there someone there that has done it already?

My basement grown tomatoes are not fully hardened off yet. I was thinking of planting them today . Since the cages are much bigger than the plants, I was planning on draping a tarp over the top so that the plants are shaded from the direct sunlight. That way I can have a few more days to harden them off.

I don't see any downside, do you ?

I say give it a go. Maybe a sheet would be a better choice?? IMO, the wind does more damage than sunlight to the babies anyway. I use bottomless ice cream pails around my transplants. Again, wind. :)

My situation was similar, so I cut up some old fenceboards (1x6's) into about 2 foot lengths, and laid them through the tomato cages so that they would block the sun when it was highest, but would allow full sun otherwise. After a few days I removed the boards and gave the plants full sun. So far, so good.

I will be dong up annuals today.....if it doesn't start raining. My tomatoes are all hardened off and living on the deck. They will go in very soon; cucs too. :) Enjoy your day in the sun Lynn!
