Did/Does Lasagna Method Work for You?

I was reading a thread from 2006, where a lot of you Far North regulars were doing lasagna beds.

What were the results? Does it really work long term?

Last fall we dug up and flipped a small area of grass. Last week I covered it about 6 inches deep with a mixture of compost, topsoil/manure mix, and have been throwing my coffee grounds in. Do you suppose the grass will come back?

The next section I want to do, is behind and an extension of what I did last week. We'd like to skip flipping the grass, but will flip it if it's just going to come back. It' also got some weeds and quackgrass in it. If I cover this area with cardboard and cover..........

- Will the grass eventually come through?

- Will it take years and years for the cardboard to break down? I don't want to dig in a big mess when I want to plant more things each year.

- Is cardboard better than newspaper? Again, I don't want to be gardening in a big mess.

- I don't want to use Roundup.

Any thoughts, comments, suggestions, experience, what to do, not to do.........

Thanks ! =:)
