new hosta bed needs help

We made a new hosta bed under the pines last spring. It's shaping up quite well. There is a large space in the north/north west corner that I would like to plant up with a shrub or two. I had thought of the Black Elder or Ninebark but I already have other varieties of those and they aren't doing well in this area. I would like something that has purple foliage (it will be planted near Sum and Substance hostas), about 4-5' tall and hardy to probably zone 3. We have lost trees and shrubs due to winter kill from the strong winds. There is a lattice type fence around the garden already. This will allow air circulation but will cut the severe north winds in winter. Since the garden is under pines, there is mostly dappled light but the area I want to put them in gets probably 3-4 hours direct sun, when the sun is directly overhead. Oh, and I also wouldn't mind if the plant had Japanese Maple type foliage either. Not being to picky am I? Any advice? Marg
