I grew them last year and I just planted them in the ground then watered the row, just like with any seed. Give them strong support -- I had them growing up about 4' high chickenwire mesh that was stapled with a staple-gun to wooden posts on either end (1" by1" I think). Once the peas got to 5' or 6', the whole thing came crashing down. It was late in the season by then though, and they'd had a ton of blooms.

I started about 20 indoors and did soak them in tepid water for 24hrs and got 95% germination. My first time though.

I've soaked them just because it said to, and I'll plunk them in the ground tomorrow against a good strong chain link fence.

I put the seeds on damp papertowel for a day or 2 until they just sprout then plant them in the garden. I tried inoculants and soaking them and always get the best results with the wet papertowel

The soaking likely will speed things up. I seem to recall mine took a couple of weeks to come up last spring.

I looked it up and one place said to start them inside the beginning of April. I started mine at the end of April - the way the weather is going, I figured that was about right! They're starting to come up now.

Well, it's two days later and I'm finally going to get time to plant them today. I've had them in a baggie with a damp paper towel and one has sprouted. I hope that's not an indication of my overall germination rate :)

Marcia, that's sure a long time to wait. Let's report back if we remember ( you, too SCG) to see if we end up with the same results or not.

Last year I planted them right in the ground in May. Took ages for them to come up and they didn't bloom very well. Hoping for better luck this year!

Lynn, I plant sweet peas every year and all I do is soak them in a wet tea towel, rag sheet, or paper towel for a couple of days or until they sprout. It helps to soften the seed coat, just like our garden peas. I have blooms every year. Plant as soon as ground can be worked and keep the roots cool. I put grass clippings around mine. :) Most beautifully fragrant flower in the garden and my favorite!
