I never used plastic,..guess you can can cut it a bit and just let it be a little longer,..on the loose side.

With parafilm and electrical tap,.. let it be until spring when taking off the electrical tape, the parafilm you never need to touch anymore after grafting.

Many different ways to graft I guess.. I've never removed anything after grafting, I just let the tree sort that part out.

I haven't grafted for a few years, but my method was to make the graft (leaving just two buds on the scion), wrap the graft union with a layer or two of black electrical tape to hold it in place, coat all of the tape and a bit of the nearby tree wood with barely melted (ie warm, not hot) grafting wax (plus the tip of the scion), then leave nature to sort things out.

If the graft was successful, then it would sort out how to shed the graft materials. Usually within a year the wax would have long since disappeared and the electrical tape would have burst and fallen off on its own.

>>and the electrical tape would have burst and fallen off on its own.Yes,. this happens to me also,. ..only sometimes, I seem to wrap too many layers lately, ..sometimes it wants to unwrap, especially when the end starts to open and the wind catches it, seems tape is not always the same.
