Voles ate bark off base of Mayday...Help!

I have a young pink Mayday that I planted a few years ago in my backyard. It's been coming along nicely until this past winter (2006/07) when we had a massive amount of snowfall.

The snow has just melted down and the bottom 6-8" of my Mayday has had the bark chewed around it by a vole I presume. (I've seen the little buggers all over the past couple years but they've never bothered anything in the yard in the past as I have seeds out for the birds and squirrels and they seem content to eat that).

I wandered over to check a couple small chokecherry slips I planted last summer and they chewed a bit on them also but not so much. They did not chew at all on my Saskatoon bushes.

My question to anyone with experience with this is, will the tree die now or should I be painting something over the area of bark they've chewed or??? I would appreciate any and all help you could give me :)

(I now realize that I will have to put some guards over the base of these next winter, if they survive)

Thanks much!!
