The birch in my front yard did not come back this year. I need another tree to replace it. I am in Edmonton, AB and my front yard faces south. I would like something quite tall so it shades the house from the sun in summer but doesn't block the sun in winter. it would be nice if it had fall color or spring flowers or something interesting as well. Any suggestions?

Amur maple? It gets 30 feet tall, not sure if that's tall enough, but it has great fall colour, leafs out early, and has scented flowers in spring.

How about a flowering crab? There are tons of beautiful ones out there. Just make sure that the one you get is disease resistant. I planted a Prairie fire in my back yard just a few weeks ago. It may not be tall enough for your needs though.
