Aruncus dioicus problem

I have a well established aruncus in my shade bed. But for the last few years I've noticed a problem. Suddenly one whole stem will start to wilt. It's not in a area where it would suffer any physical damage. I've just noticed it's happening again this year. Upon cutting out the stem, I could see that right at ground level the stem is rotted. I'm not sure what would cause this or what I should do about it.

Any idea what it could be causing this? It so far hasn't affected the whole plant, but I'm concerned that whatever it is, since it is recurring, might progress to that stage.

I really like this plant and would welcome any suggestions.

Thanks.
