Potentilla

How does everyone look after their potentilla? Mine always look so scruffy--I trim them in the spring and try to shape them somewhat but they always looks so scruffy and unkempt. Some I see are beautiful--is there a trick? Does anyone fertilize them? And if so, with what?

Gotta prune them hard. Take out at least one third of the thickest branches every spring.

I prune them hard too. I cut off anything winterkilled and then thin them out a little. They look pretty good but mine don't get quite enough sun anymore.

Off topic, but does anyone else find their potentillas make quite a few babies? I keep finding seedlings nearby.

Yup. I even found a "runner" a good three feet away once. Pulled it out, went all the way back to the main plant!

My potentillas look scruffy too if I don't prune them but my biggest problem is that the dogs love them for scratching posts. Must be the rough bark.
