They could be tatarian maple...they look a little bit "fat" for that, though... I find it can be a bit hard to tell on young leaves, sometimes the shape changes as the leaves mature.

The only maples native to British Columbia are the vine, bigleaf, and douglas maples...and your tree certainly doesn't like like any one of those species. I'd second the opinion of Tatarian maple, but you may want to post some more pictures of it once the leaves get bigger -- it's sometimes difficult to identify young maple leaves due to deformities &c.

I got this from a job site in Fernie. I am still hoping the tree will start again. It was/is 10' tall.
