In Lois Hole`s book Favorite Trees and Shrubs she recommends Catawba - Hindustan and Roseum Elegans, PJM Hybrids - Aglo, Compact, Henry`s Red, PJM and Regal. I know they prefer acidic soil and need to be consistently moist which pretty much means an exercise in frustration in southwestern Alberta`s gravelly, alkaline soil. A local greenhouse stocks PJM Elite, Nova Zembla and Rosy Lights and they are pretty good at offering what has a reasonable chance of surviving our chinooks. They also recommend mixing half peat moss, half organic soil, keeping moist, sheltered and mulched for winter. I have never tried them, sheltered spaces at a premium and too much fuss. Hope this info helps you out.

I had one, didn't make the winter here in zone 2, actually have never seen any around that have lasted a winter. Asked my mIL in clairsholm and she never sees them either

Thanks. That is exactly what I have been hearing. Some are rated for zone 4 but I haven't heard of anyone that has had them survive. I figured that if someone had one survive in zone 3 or so I would have a winner. Thanks again I may try one shilla suggested for her.

Just did some research on Rhodo's looking to see if they grow in 100 Mile house or Quesnel both zone 3/4 and found that Labrador Tea is a type of Rhodo. Upon finding that I can guarantee it will grow in zone 3 as I have seen it in the wild in Prince George and North.
