It'll be a sparrow of some type. Both the Chipping and American Tree sparrow are common, small, brown and have blue eggs with reddish spots.

Agreed. Look like sparrow eggs I have encountered. Not uncommon for them to lose a nest. I had a pair nest 4 times before they had success. I blame the skunks.

Thanks for the I.D. The nest was right in the middle of a daylily. The last nest was in Jack Frost Brunnera. At least these birds pick nice plants to nest in! We do have skunks here but they don't come close to the house, thankfully. My guess is the neighbours barn cats. The nest we found in the Brunnera we put a large cage around so the dog couldn't get them. After a few days those eggs were gone to. Marg
