Helenium leaves curling up - why?

ostrich

I planted a big and healthy Helenium Double Trouble over a month ago and it has been doing well, until the recent heatwave in Calgary! Now the leaves in the top third of the plants are curling up almost every day, esp. after a day of hot sunshine. Then I would water it and the leave would straighten out again. However, it means that I have to water it with lots of water daily now!

Is this normal? Is Helenium quite a thirsty thing!!?? I am hoping that as the root system grows deeper, it will stop doing this! Or is this abnormal? It is grown in a west facing sunny spot, so perhaps it does not like as much sun???
