Petunia buds drying, not opening

I have some lovely double petunias in pots. Until lately they have bloomed well. They are still full of early blooms. Some blooms open, but many dry up as small buds. I've been deadheading the old blooms regularly. What am I missing?

Thrips - buds do not open or open partially and petals are damaged. Thrips are very tiny, sap-sucking insects that get into buds of many flowers and cause serious damage.

Are you fertilizing on a regular basis?

    Watering on a regular basis?

Petunias are extremely heavy feeders and suck water like there's no tomorrow. I have a 10 inch hanging petunia basket and I put at least two quarts of water in it every day. Make sure you fertilize every day.

Thank you for your suggestions. I do think it was Thrips. I've sprayed the plants and they are doing much better. I thought the little black specks on the leaves were dirt.WRONG!
