They (the mail order catalogues) do claim it is self-fertile but as with all things I also read somewhere that you may get a heavier crop if there is another cherry around to cross-pollinate.

I do have Rose Cherry and my annual crops have ranged from nothing (last year, okay, maybe 6 cherries), to moderate the year before (quite a few but not heavy). This year it looks like it's going to be just a very light crop.

Not sure why the variability. My tree gets part sun and no extra care, maybe that's why.

Thanks Glen for the info. Then I won't be getting my hopes up too high. At least the tree has an interesting form so I can use it for ornamental purposes until it decides to fruit.

Your welcome Daisy. My Rose Cherry experience was sort of comical. I bought it as a 6 inch rooted cutting (some sort of special at the T&T seeds garden centre). I planted it in one corner and moved it, due to building a fence. Then, the next spring I decided to move it to the right corner of the yard (where it's stayed since).

I nearly removed it one spring after a rabbit ate it down to the ground but decided to give it a chance to come back. With it's established root system it really came back quick (up to 4 feet high that season).

You are right, it's quite attractive with it's glossy leaves at the very least.

As far as I know, all sour cherries are self fertile, you could have had a light frost when in bloom?
I'm sure, when the all of the elements just hit right, then you will have a crop.
