Fall blooming bulbs

Just wondered if our season here is long enough for any of the fall blooming bulbs such as crocus, anemone, etc. Anyone grow these and how do you rate them; suggestions appreciated! Thanks.

RE: Fall blooming bulbs

I planted Colchicum 'The Giant' last year, it made the winter so I'm hoping to see it bloom this fall.
I'll take a photo if it does ;)

RE: Fall blooming bulbs

Ditto for me Debbie, I planted crocus zonatus last fall and they came through nicely...but we'll have to see if they bloom.

RE: Fall blooming bulbs

My MIL gave me some Colchicum a few years back and despite being planted in some really crappy Calgary soil without being mulched, they bloomed surprisingly well. As far as I remember they came up 3 years in a row, don't know how they're doing now. Even though you had to get down on your hands and knees to smell them, it was worth it!

RE: Fall blooming bulbs

I suspect Scilla numidica/scilliodes should do well for you. They bloom usually late August, with small pink-lavendar spikes. I can't tell the difference between them, except that numidica might be a little larger.

I still have enough seed of scillioides to give away from 2007 for two more people. Or you could remind me this fall around mid September for this year's crop.
