Haha, that figures. I bought one last year and it came through the winter very well. it has grown to about 2 feet or so and really bushed out, but no blooms this year. I'm not surprised in my zone though, this is often the case. My four year old (four year's since I planted it, mind you, so it is probably five years) goat's beard finally bloomed this year, yay!
There were some leaves on the Baily that turned black and curled up that I was concerned about but it seems to have done no harm and cleared up.

Most compact cultivars of Viburnum trilobum and V. opulus are shy bloomers or do not bloom at all. Bailey's Compact and especially Afreddo are exceptions that bloom more.

Edibility for birds seems to be variable for a lot of species, not just viburnums. I recall that no animals or birds ate ANY of my littles Sugar Thyme crabapples. They fell on the ground in the spring and rotted, while a friend's Sugar Thymes were feasted upon every year.

Likewise, I have seen some wild Viburnum trilobums stripped clean by January, while others not touched until March.

I have an American Cranberry (not compact). Birds aren't keen on the seeds that I can see. They are bright red and pretty, foliage in fall is spectacular! Flowers every year white flower mopheads that look like hydrangea blooms. Grows in shade or sun.
