tree rose

My mother got a "flower carpet" tree rose as a gift. Now what do we do with it for the winter? It has now been planted in the flower bed. How do we protect it from our severe winter weather. Do we have to take any extraordinary measures with it. I presume we have to mulch the roots. Do we have to wrap the graft in a "blanket" to keep it warm for the winter? What have others done and how successful were your endevors?

We are in central Alberta.

Hi Karen, welcome to the FN forum!

Well you can dig it up and pot it, then store it in a cool frost-free dark place like a cold room, crawl space, slightly heated garage/barn.

Or you could dig it up, lay it flat in a trench, cover with a good layer of soil and mulch.

I have my doubts that it will survive if you burlap it, but you never know we could have another awesome winter again.
