When do you stop watering the newly planted shrubs/perennials?

I read that in our climate (zone 3, Calgary), we should stop watering the plants and trees in early fall to allow them to go dormant so that they will be ready for the frigid winter.

I wonder if this applies to newly planted trees/shrubs/perennials too? If they have only been planted over the last month or two, they don't have an established root system yet. Should I still stop watering them now?

Thanks for all your patience with my questions. After a year or two, I will be much more familiar with all this zone 3 stuff for sure! :-) Thanks again!
