My monster squirrel

I have had problems with squirrels for as long as I can remember. They love to dig up my bulbs and stash them wherever they are calling home. Apparently in my neighbours birdhouses.....and my BBQ!Anyway, I tried planting the bulbs in baby powder, dipping them in bleach, and covering with wire or gravel or whatever. The little stinkers still get them! So I decided to beat them at their own game and start feeding them with things much more appetizing than spring bulbs. Now they leave my bulbs alone but have created a new problem.....for the birds.

Everytime I go out to fill the lasagna dish with seed and peanuts for the birds (and the squirrel) this little monster fills the dish with pinecones and then guards his stash with his life! He literally pounces on the birds and chases them through the trees. Up and down the fence and sits in the tree above watching! It is quite commical especially when the jays and maggies swoop down and throw the cones out all over the place. :) Nature never ceases to amuse me. A couple of pics tell part of the story.

That's hilarious!

I feel sorry for the little birds getting attacked by the squirrel, though.

That reminds me. I haven't seen our squirrel for a while.......maybe he followed our ants and wasps. =:)

He just jumps on the big birds like the maggies and jays, but he's ferocious! He's watching me in the picture, to make sure I don't steal his stash! I counted 18 pinecones in that one! And the little chickadees were just waiting, chirping and singing their praises that the dish was full of seed under all those cones! :)

So cute! For some reason the squirrels never bother my bulbs. But a couple of years ago my big blue spruces produced a bumper crop of cones, and the squirrels collected them and stacked them against the trunks, about 3 feet high and wide. They snacked on them all winter and in the spring there were heaps of the little cob thingies from inside. Pretty cute!

Would love to see a pic of that, Gil! These cones are from a white spruce. There are thousands of them. I'm sure these little guys pack away all they can carrry for winter. Have yet to come across their stash of cones. :)

Squirrels are so cute. We have a row of pine trees behind our barn and every fall when I walk the dogs back there I see 'pyramids' of pine cones! Around here they get ganged up on by about half a dozen blue jays if they get to close to the feeder. It's strange but all I ever see is a red squirrel and 2 chipmunks. Marg

Great story!
It's fun to watch wildlife, this thread reminds me of a camping trip many years ago when in late fall the Van got bombarded with cones, I picked up some for the seeds, [white spruce] now I have over a hundred trees growing on the property.
