Your favorite quick lunch and beverage?

The intensive gardening season will soon begin in my Zone 6 region. Experience has taught me that it’s sometimes hard to make myself break for lunch, and that it’s important to keep hydrated (especially when the weather really starts to heat up).

I was wondering what you other obsessive garden workaholics like to eat when your blood sugar has plummeted, your stamina has broken, and you become too weak to haul a bin of compost or wield a shovel.

Here are my quick and easy lunch favorites. When there’s still a chill in the air, a toasted cheese sandwich on 7-grain bread and a bowl of tomato soup, and a cup of Irish breakfast tea. When it’s warmer, dill or roasted pepper hummus on a garam masala (Indian spices) flat bread layered with sprouts, and maybe a green or herbal tea. When it’s really hot, a garden tomato sandwich, and lots of liquids all day: lime or lemonade, iced herbal of caffeinated teas, spring water from the fridge or a drink right from the garden hose and sometimes, near the end of a productive day, a nice bottle of India pale ale or other hoppy beer. As garden snacks become available, I can always crunch on radishes or a carrot, or a green pepper with a little salt to maintain electrolyte levels.

How about you all? What do you eat when you just have to take that midafternoon "lunch" break or faint? What drink braces you or slakes your thirst?

Thanks,

cranebill

cranebill,
I just throw something in the microwave from last night's
dinner if I didn't cook, some ceral or chips or I just run
down to wendy's or call pizza hut for one of their vegetable
pizza's. When I am working in the garden I like to drink bottled water as for drinking straight out of the waterhose
I dont trust the water here. I use store bought water to
cook in to make the coffee and tea with and have water
buckets at the eves of the house to collect rain for the plants.

An apple and some lightly salted peanuts or natural peanut butter and crackers. Lemonade or iced tea. The tea must be after something is on the stomach or it will make me sick.

Pizza last week, but more often I nuke a bowl of Chili, Thai-spiced garden stir-fry, or leftover soup-of-the-week, with pepper, winter greens, & minced Chinese Leek stirred in to freshen up flavors.

If I'm shaky-tired hungry, Tuna on poppyseed bread, with dijon and cheeze is a great comfort - even better with big leaves of mustard green or other peppery greens inside. If in season, open-faced, with fresh broiled tomato oozing on top. Mmmmm! (I've got about 8 kinds of tomatoes sprouting now! YAY!)

I love a good IPA or malty Craft Beer after gardening too. With friends is even more of a reward, but who really wants to leave the garden, clean up and travel to meet em?
