Help with a childhood plant!

I have no idea where to post this topic since I am brand new at this ...

Since I have started my seeds in my kitchen for my first garden, it got me thinking about some of my favorite childhood plants.

My wish list will include Jack in the Pulpit and Chinese Lanterns. I remember these fondly from my childhood at my grandmother's house.

While I was thinking of these, another favorite popped into my head and I have no idea what kind of plant it is/was.

The brief description I have will probably be of no help whatsoever, but I thought it was worth a shot.

All I remember of the plant was that it was fairly small and green, and it had "pods" on it that the kids would pick off and squeeze between their fingers. The pod would make a snapping sound and "pop" open. I don't remember this plant having flowers on it thought. I thought it was a touch me not or a forget me not (I remember those names from childhood too) but after looking them up in the internet, it wasn't either of those, I don't guess, since they have flowers.

Sooooooooooooo, based on that WEALTH of information, anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Kendra

You are talking about the "touch me not". It is also called balsalm. It is related to the impatiens.

Yep - it's Balsam. We used to pick the pods and throw them at each other.

I remember my grandmothers garden full of sweet williams, foxgloves, pansies, artemisia, tiger lilies, old fashioned shrub roses and a plant that grew by our front door that she called golden balls. When fully flowered it had round yellow balls on long stems that looked similar to a peony just before it fully opens.I have never seen it anywhere since.I guess you could say she had a 'cottage'garden long before that term was used.
