suggestions for gardening magazines

Can anyone suggest a good (reliable, interesting, not overwhelming) gardening magazine (or two)? Although I've had some success with hit-or-miss gardening, this seems to be the year I've fully committed. These forums have been a huge help, but I'd like a magazine or two to play with as well. Any thoughts? Vegetables and herbs take up most of my space and time, but I like flowers and shrubs too.

I'm going to post this message on the "vegetables" forum as well.

Thanks for your help!

So far the gardening magazine that is my favorite is Garden Gate.

I second the motion for Garden Gate. I haven't liked Garden Design at all, and I find Horticulture to be more ads than content. Fine Gardening occasionally tempts me from the newsstand, but I don't subscribe.

Garden Gate is cool, and practical. So many are just pretty pictures, very little actual content. It's just a bit expensive for me! Go to their tips archive, you'll see what you can expect.

Well, if your just starting, try Organic Gardening so you can get off on the correct way of gardening Organic of course :)! They have become pretty basic and simple over the last year (too simple and basic if you are an experienced gardner) and are also including more stuff for flowers and suburban gardners.

Fine Gardening and Garden Gate. Garden Design is probably 65% to 70% ads. They called yesterday to ask for a renewal. As I was describing my displeasure to the sales person, she hung up on me. Oh well! That is money I will use for more plant purchases. Too bad there isn't a good design magazine on the newstand. There are so many areas for exploration.

Fine Gardening is really good - I've read it for years and keep all copies.

Org Gardening ir OK for beginners; agree that's it's become disapppointing for the rest of us.

A simple newsletter which is really terrific is The Avant Gardener. No ads, no photos, just a lot of good info on all topics. Horticultural Data Processors, Box 489, New York, NY 10028. Monthly - $24 a year and well worth it.

Also - borrow copies from your local library or lots of others and see what works for you.

    reading is fun!!

Doggone it! Y'all had to go & mention reading material AND give a link!!! Of course I went straight to it & subscribed! I had heard Garden Gate is a great magazine at a Perennial Gardening class I'm taking, so when saw it on your list, just couldn't resist. Both my addictions in one - gardening & reading. LOL - Lynn

Fine Gardening without a doubt! Have been subscribing since 1990 and keep all the back issues. It is the only magazine I read over and over - Great articles, not a lot of fluff - yes some advertising but not overwhelming.

It is a little pricey but the only gardening magazine out there that has been around for a long time. This one is a keeper.

Become a member of the American Horticultural Society and get their "American Gardener". No advertisements, good articles - too bad they only have 6 issues a year. The best I've seen for no nonsense articles.

I too love Garden Gate and Fine Gardening. No one mentioned Country Living Gardener and Country Homes Country Gardens. These are my four favorites.
