What do you do with rocks?

I come from a place where there are no rocks. That was in south Louisiana where all the land was formed by sediment from the Mississippi. Flat as a pancake. But I've recently taken up gardening in Georgia and keep digging up all these rocks. Being rock disposal deprived, it seemed reasonable to me to just piled them all up in and out of the way place. And when asked, I refer to it as my rock group. So tell me, those of you who grew up with these things, is there a good way of dealing with rocks?

Depends on how many you have, what size, etc. I use mine in areas where the roof overhangs the yard; it's as dry as a bone because the rain can't reach it, and the sun beats down on it all day. I piled large rocks there and created a rock garden. We're talking boulders here. I also use largish size rocks to provide shade for the roots of my clematis, and I saw a picture in a gardening magazine of a lovely "bench" that had been made from large rocks cemented together and overgrown with moss; it was stunning. And here I've been sitting on just the individual rocks on the ground, when I could have had a bench all along!

RE: What do you do with rocks?

I have zillions of very small rocks. I used pieces of bluestone and slate left over from a patio and made a sort of terrace with plants in between and the small rocks in the spaces left. I edged it with old brick dug up from various places in the yard.

RE: What do you do with rocks?

From one flatland native to another. I never had to deal with rocks until we moved to Waynesboro, VA in 1974. I started a low rock border around my garden which was quite large. Never got to finish it because I really didn't think to start this until 1976 and we ended up moving in 1977. Had smaller types in Manassas, VA which I simply used as mulch in some areas to keep weeds out. In West Virginia, I was introduced to boulders (that should be its nickname - the boulder state). The ones I could move, I used to create a low rock wall around our front yard. Figured I'd be adding to it for the rest of my life, but we moved from there, also, before it got very high, although it did help with soil erosion from our newly seeded lawn. In my current yard, we have mostly smaller rocks which I'm currently collecting and using as mulch with the intention that if I collect enough to use them to prevent grass from growing between our patio squares. I also use them for protection against my dogs trampling certain plants, and I use one medium size one for pounding stakes in the ground for my tomatoe plants.

RE: What do you do with rocks?

Those of us in Michigan have a love-hate relationship with our rocks. Have so many. Backbreaking work to pick rocks but many uses. Here's some ways we have dealt with them:

built a rock garden for sedums
used pretty blue rocks around our water garden
in the process of building a dry stone wall
used stones at base of clematis to keep roots cool
used stone to secure post before pouring in cement
used stone to mark the end of garden rows of squash, etc.
used a boulder for the waterfall on goldfish pond
used stones to hold plants in place in water garden
painted small stone bright red to discourage birds around strawberry plants
used rocks as hammers (can never find one)
used pretty rocks in garden where there is a bare spot
when the kids were little they played with rocks
when the kids were in school they did reports on rocks
gave away rocks to family and friends that were rockless

People visiting from other states like our rocks. When we go on vacation out of state, we like their rocks.

Buy 22 tons and gravelscaped the front yard...seriously. Then I start gardening, cuss the rocks that cost me money and continuously dig nearly the same thing out of every hole. Now I have rocks upon rocks and buy soil, BUT... these rocks are used as mulch, edging, secondary fencing to keep the dog from digging under the real fence, layered under the hose to keep the soil in place when you're deep watering, thrown back in the holes for drainage, etc. Anything pretty goes in among the flower beds. Anything unusual goes into my native American rock collection.

RE: What do you do with rocks?

Look! Just learn to love'em ha! Wish I had some of them . When vacationing in NC I search river beds for FOOT shaped rocks. They make nice gift paperweights or garden ornaments. I use permanent marker(black)to mark of toes/nails,then use my (old) nail polish to paint the toe nails. My flower garden has a few left ,as I give them to friends who compliment them. I live in FL,and feel it is time to head to NC, as my garden rocks are low! Have FUN gardners

RE: What do you do with rocks?

I grew up in Michigan- always had rocks. Then in college I lived in Florida for a while. I was babysitting one day and thought we would play hopscoth. Lo and behold, no rocks to toss onto the squares! I don't remember what we did use- pinecones, I think!

 o
RE: What do you do with rocks?

Thank you all. What I'm hearing is: "use them creatively and have fun with them. But don't just leave them in a pile." This could turn into a chalenge.

 o
RE: What do you do with rocks?

We live on a ridge in NJ where every time it rains more rocks appear. We just keep adding them to the stone rows. If, when digging a bed, they're large enough and the 'right color' they become edgers and/or stepping stones.

 o
RE: What do you do with rocks?

Extending the already existing stone wall from when the land along the boundary. Using them to fill in strange depressions in the lawn, then covering with turf. Sitting on the large ones, with a cup of tea. Ignoring the biggest three and pretending its some kind of zen thing . . .

 o
RE: What do you do with rocks?

I've used flat rocks under the drip line of a porch that had no gutter. Before, the water splashed dirt onto the plants. The line of rocks doubled as a maintenance path for the back of the garden. Round river stones made a mulch under a rose; I used larger river stones to edge the area. Sounds kind of cheesey, but it gave a pleasant cottage garden look. I use very small pebbles for humidifying my houseplants. I put them in a tray, then set the houseplants an top, keeping the water level below the bottom of the pot.

I pile a few stones in corners of the vegetable garden. They come in handy as markers and to weigh down row covers.

RE: What do you do with rocks?

I have a rock Herb Garden idea that you may want to try. Start with a large circle of rocks, on top of prepared soil, or lay down a few inches of wet newspapers, if you're starting on grass. Begin at a point on your circle, using large rocks, and make a "swirl" of rocks, as you add dirt and compost, ending with gradually smaller rocks. Eventually, you will have a really neat, terraced, swirled rock Herb Garden to plant. Mine is only about 3 feet high at the top, and about 5 feet across, but I have seen them up to 5 feet tall. This may be hard to visualize, so email me, if you want further details. Diana ;D

RE: What do you do with rocks?

Each year I go on a rock hunt - led by a retired Geology professor. He takes us to a farmer's plowed field way out in the country (I can't ever find it on my own!), where we can pick up all the petrified, crystalized wood/rock that we want (that's how that farmer clears HIS land each year!!!!). They are thousands of years old, coming down with the glaciers from North Dakota and other northern states. The individual crystals on the rocks catch the glint of the sun at different times of the day. I put them out amongst all of my little gardens and enjoy their twinkles - as if I had gardens filled with diamonds! Kathy in Kansas

RE: What do you do with rocks?

I use them to make borders for all kinds of flower beds!Ginna

 o
RE: What do you do with rocks?

I like to carve them! I use my dremel, and a big bad air chisel and make bird baths and things like that. I give them away. I have one someone said in another room that was cute, they put pressed flowers on. Now I just need to figure out what to do with that one. I just have fun with them. We line ponds and make waterfalls we line some of our paths with them .......

 o
RE: What do you do with rocks?

I like to print the names of my special hostas on them. This way I can see the names at a glance and visitors can also identify the special ones. Peg

RE: What do you do with rocks?

I started my rock walls just digging the gardens. Every time i put the shovel in the ground i give birth to a new rock. I now have many rock walls and people often stop and want our rocks. Doesn't hurt to live right behind the gravel pits. They are giving us a HUGE rock- weighs tons. Looking for a place we can put it where it will not have to ever be moved. Becouse the pit is closing and the huge piece of equipment used to move it will be moving on. Dh has started a new wall across the front yard. I looks great.Just love rocks.

 o
RE: What do you do with rocks?

put the rocks in pails and set them at the end of your drive. i am ALWAYS looking for good rocks to add to my aquariums, and i know many other aquarists have this problem too.

 o
RE: What do you do with rocks?

I sometimes use beach stones to cover the soil on large potted plants. That way, when the plants are watered, the soil stays put, the stones turn their beautiful bright colors again, and the moisture doesn't evaporate from the plants as readily.

 o
RE: What do you do with rocks?

LOVE my rocks! I live in the Kettle Morraine portion of Wisconsin and have every size rock from boulders to pebbles. We have: built an entry wall, which makes our lot look like an estate; made a rock garden sloping away from the house, which helped reduce erosion; edged the areas around the pine trees where grass wouldn't grow and filled under it with bark, reducing maintenance time on the lawn and frustration of trying to grow grass where it is not possible; created small garden paths using pebbles and paving blocks etc. It's now spring and we covet the rocks our neighbors have plowed up in their fields. Must get out the tractor one moonless night and make a rock run!

Hi:
Used to live in Mountain Home Arkansas, the Rock capital of the world. Used them to build barrier walls
between the natural area, and your grassy ares. They also put them in wire mesh and use them for driveway entrance markers on either side of the driveway. Also good for putting around the base of a tree with flowers inside the rock circle.

Smooth rocks make very nice plant markers. In acrylic I paint on a stylized picture of the flower or leaves and the plants name. Also, paint on quotes from poems or famous literature to leave around the garden- something to ponder while pulling weeds. And I'll have you know, that here in So. Cal. nurseries actually SELL little rocks with a single word on it like "Peace" or "Happiness" for about $6.00. And have you heard of "Prayer Rocks"? A big seller. You could be missing out on a business opportunity.

 o
RE: What do you do with rocks?

Rocks are also great for drain fields and faux dry stream beds. My husband and I are creating a Japanese-style rock garden with them, and they're perfect for those areas where nothing will grow but the weeds. I also saw a really cute path where someone had used plain square pavers for the steps but had filled the space in between with smaller round rocks pressed into the soil. Rocks rock!

RE: What do you do with rocks?

I live in Rocky Arkansas,we moved here from Calif.a mumber of years ago .At first I guess we lacked imagnation becaused we tossed them into a already rocky forested area on the right side of our place .But now I simply cant round up enough rocks .After many rock intensive projects we talked to some young men that had a large load of rocks on pallets on a trailer that sell rocks to the rock yards that are springing up here and into Oklahoma. They sure are shipping billions of tons of rock out of here.It wasnt like that 8 or 9 years ago when we moved here I guess most every one has gone rock crazy, just like me.I have a large creek on the left side of our property that is lined with all sizes of river rock that my grands swim and play in, so I hate to get very many from there and damage it natural beauty.I built a rock harth and bar in my guest house, and under pinned it all around with rock,I have edged many flower beds with rocks, some flower beds still need rocks,am building a rock patio, just want to make it bigger-maybe make 2 or 3 joining areas or rooms to it ,also want rock tables and benches, want to make a nice rock bbq pit with a rockcounter and double sink, maybe a pond boarded with rock?would love a little rock wall maybe a rock dry creek bed.Ive condemplated building a pretty rock entry to go on both sides of our drive way.Ive even dreamed of building a rock casle, but am getting too old too do that, being a granny and all ,well maybe a casle playhouse for the grands i sure would love to- well I can dream cant I .Oh yes I want a bridge to across that dry creek ,but it must be made out of rocks.Every thing Ive already built so far has only cost me for cement and portland ,a little bit at a time and lots of latex gloves, occasional finger tip cement burns any way and some time when nothing else was ed pressing and I wanted to play with rocks .However my husband tryed to by that load of rocks off thoses guys hauling rocks to the rock yard ,but they were already promised, but he did get their phone number, and they said they would mix in some nice boulders. My husband also accuses me with being obcessed and says enough is never enough.I cant imagine why-ha. RE: What do you do with rocks?

In the last town I lived in, there is a cemetary with a beautiful tombstone which is rock covered. I always wanted to make my own, with polished river rock...am going to try to get a picture of the tombstone to post when I go back to visit this weekend.

Small rocks are great cover for flower beds where you want to keep the cats and squirrels from digging!

RE: What do you do with rocks?

Rocks, real rocks. In your yard???? Wow, what a concept. You can just move them around from one spot to another? Wow. I live on the gulf coastal plain, in the Dog River/ Fowl River/ Mobile River delta. I would love to have rocks. Flat irregular ones, rounded soft looking ones, big ones, small ones, even gravel. I wouldn't be picky. Any rocks. There aren't any rocks here. We have to buy them if we want them. Or try to learn how to make them. A lot of the time you see people using slabs of concrete to substitute for rocks because those rocks cost sooooo much. Cherish your rocks as Dee says, you're so lucky to have them. And if you don't want your rocks I'll be happy to give them a home, you can send them to me down here in the "flatlands", lol.

 o
RE: What do you do with rocks?

I love rocks, have them around all my flower beds. Dig them up all the time, especially out in the big field when plowing each year. Also it's good to have a rock pile for the critters (spiders, lizards, etc) and butterflies like to soak up the sun on big flat rocks.

What do I do with rocks? I buy them...by the ton. :) Around here if you want rocks that's how to get them...unless you're lucky enough to have a creek with sandstone rocks.

 o
RE: What do you do with rocks?

My latest rock project was to take a series of flat rocks to use as part of my downspout splashguard(that sends the water away from the house). I overlap them kind of like how steps progress and away the water goes but in an attractive way! I also lined the sides of the waterway with rounded and different colored stones. Now I just have to do the new plantings on each side since this waterspout cuts through my garden. I did this same job on my frontyard downspout and when it rains the hostas and ajuga look like a mini paradise as the rain flows through them(and the rocks!).

I like stones in my garden with plantings tucked next to them-has a very natural look if you slightly sink them below the soil surface.

 o
RE: What do you do with rocks?

I've noticed the same thing as Wildflower from Georgia. Make a pile of small rocks and leave it alone for a number of years. Stick lizards will take up residence, and in my yard interesting red and black spiders.

There are a lot of plants that don't like damp conditions. Put a light layer of small stones or gravel under them. For example, thyme and lavender, it cuts down on rot in very wet years.

Bigger rocks add winter interest. The glacial rock fragments we have around here are interesting in that they assume different colors when wet as opposed to dry.

They are a good mulch. They will not blow around or wash away, or attract cats to leave dumps in them like some mulches do. If you really have a lot of small ones you could use them as a base for a walk or wall - it will provide good drainage and long term stability, and you can get rid of a lot of them that way.

 o
RE: What do you do with rocks?

Harvest them!
Every fall when the poison ivy dies back, I start hauling in the rocks. 100 years ago our property was a farm and I think of those poor farmers spinning in their graves as I haul BACK all the rocks they hauled OUT to the edges of the fields. LOL!

I edge the gardens with them. I rim the pond with them. I built a waterfall out of them. Then I had to make rock gardens so all that would look natural. I love my rocks!

I, um... well.... place them strategically in my house (only the most special ones and obviously they are not huge!!)... Does this make me strange?? LOL

 o
RE: What do you do with rocks?

I have a few well-placed rocks in my garden- they have herbs of various types surrounding them, and they look really nice. I have a big flat one to step on in the front bed to get to the spigot. Small rocks I put in the botom of terracotta pots to keep the soil from washing out. I don't have really big rocks- I wish!

 o
RE: What do you do with rocks?

Pebble paving! I've been creating mowing strips and stepping stones with the mass quantities of rounded rock I've dug up in our yard, set into mortar.

 o
RE: What do you do with rocks?

I love rocks, too. There are so many things you can do with them... I use them for borders, stack a few around plants, make a back drop, just anything that comes to mind. I get so many compliments on them... I love the idea of a plant marker. They are a great help in keeping cats from using your flower garden as the potty place..

Anyone can use them in any way. Just place them around and step back and take a look. If you don't like the look, just pick them up and move them.. They can add so much to your garden..

We have a local sandblasting place close by so I had our name placed in a hugh rock and of course a tulip, too.. Oh so pretty !!!!

There are so many things I would like to do with rocks -- if only we had some! Here in coastal northern CA, you must buy them.

I envy folks who have old stone walls, whether mortared or dry-laid. Everybody does; they're relatively rare and nowadays almost no one can afford to put them in except the wealthy.

We built a lot of retaining walls and planting beds in the last two years as we landscaped our nice sloping hillside lot, all out of concrete block. We designed a nice little curving, sloped pathway of flagstones and Mexican pebbles, about 5'W x 6'L. The cost of the flagstones and pebbles was almost twice the cost of an entire backyard of concrete block planting beds!

Californians have the best weather, but we also have a serious case of Rock Envy....
