What is turning up my lawn?

Posted by sandeef Vermont (My Page) on

I have these spots all over my lawn that look like footprints, except that they are more like golf divots. There is what appears like a hole where the sod has been turned over and the dirt is exposed. I suspect that some sort of animal is turning the sod over to look for something to eat, maybe grubs or something. But I am extremely curious to know which animal might be doing this. I have a huge German Shephard in the yard and he never barks at night when this critter is around, which is very unusual. He usually lets you know even if the moles are moving around.

After a month, did you solve this mystery, Sandeef?

The only thing I can think of is that the German Shepherd is doing it himself.

Same thing happened to me twice now. I also have a dog but she sleeps indoors at night so it can't be the canine. Sod is too heavy for squirrels to lift. It's likely to be possums or racoons digging for grub.
