Purple? smoke tree

I recently purchased a "purple" smoke tree from Lowes. It was clearly marked as purple, but all the leaves are green. I thought purple smoke trees were purple even as immature specimens. Any ideas? THanks, Shoot

Hello Shoot,
I wonder if you ever found out?
Did you ever notice the older smoke trees seem to be the really purple ones and only if they are in full sun. They come in several colors of purple and green also. We have 2 different very young ones, a bonsai and one in the ground and they both got some green leaves after mid summer just like our japanese maple but they are in half sun. You may want to do a search on Cotinus at this link. They have several types with pictures. Also take a look at Dave's Garden.

Here is a link that might be useful: search Cotinus
