I love growing dianthus- can't get enough.
I really like the little alpine dome types, also the long stemmed beauties.
What are some of your favorites?

Well, here are the ones I appreciate most - however, I'm going to list both their good points and bad points, LOL! Dianthus 'Mrs. Sinkins' - a hybrid, I believe, with white carnation-type double flowers that are VERY fragrant; blue foliage. It's fully hardy and does very well here, which is a terrific improvement over D. caryophyllus varieties (which survive for me, but diminish year-by-year). The only bad point is that the stems are rather weak, and allow the flowers to flop (but then so did all the caryophyllus varieties I've grown). My other favorite is Dianthus monspessulanus - again VERY fragrant. It's rather unusual in that the flowers are mauve, rather than the usual warm colors of dianthus, and in that the fragrance is a sweet, wafting perfume rather than the usual spicy fragrance. Also fully hardy, and a good performer. It's only bad point is just relative - that the flowers are a bit less showy than on some more highly-colored dianthus species. I guess I particularly like both of these because they are more strongly fragrant than all the other dianthus I grow, such that the air around them is perfumed. |

| I really love dianthus caryophyllus. I planted some seeds in pots on my balcony and the maroon ones in particular smell super clove-like and very strong. Unfortunately the local wildlife - possums or parrots, I don't know which - keep picking them and carrying them off. They just shred the pale ones and leave the petals on the ground. |
