Anyone interested in a forum or those of us who are Not resentful or jealous of Martha Stewart or her success and skill? Just a thought.

Not really. What would we talk about? There seem to be forums enough between the GardenWeb and its sister forum, ThatHomeSite, to cover pretty much everthing of the ilk presented by the MS productions. If you're interested in those sorts of things, just dive right in! I find myself able to exchange info about lots of thos things without ever making reference to MS, one way or the other. No big deal.

I'm a Martha fan---she's a "good thing"---besides, I have almost as many bowls as she does.

One does not have to be resentful of something one finds no value in. I wouldn't want to deprive those with nothing better to do of their forum.

I like to watch MS, just wish she would comb her hair.

Martha carries a garden line in Kmart. New this year that they have are "her" seeds and they aren't from her garden..they're from Burpees!
Not just another pretty face

Heck of an entrepreneur. I was getting pretty sarcastic about her for a while, getting hammered by her face everywhere, the pop culture queen of the middle class. The stockbroker who took her whole background public. Then somebody told me she helped her dad keep bees. I like that. Hope like Jim Brown, Iacocca, and Marlene Dietrich, she knows when to quit. Life ain't just about a 900 calorie diet. Here is a link that might be useful: My 1/4 acre of the world

I attended a number of seminars at our local (Portland, OR) Lawn, Garden & Patio Show. We had some great speakers including Dan Hinkley of Heronswood, Anne Lovejoy, C. Colston Burrell, Barbara Blossom Ashmun and some great local writers. I went to 8 seminars (they're free!!) Now to the point: 7 of 8 of the presenters I saw mentioned Martha Stewart in one context or another. Most were comments like "Don't worry, Martha's not coming to visit" or "Don't be intimidated by Martha's ideal of the newest plants", one admitted to not subscribing to her magazine, but furtively looking at it while at the dentist's office. She said she just could not get past the folded sheets tied with a ribbon placed in the linen closet. I found it interesting. She really hits different chords with different people. The crowds reaction was also interesting. Many laughed knowingly at the comments, seeming to feel either resentful or sick of her. Just don't know. Personally I am a fan, I just don't expect to be her.

Camille, I'm jealous of -you- being able to see and hear all my favorite garden gurus! Just teasing...but what a treat. As for MS, I think most of her products I've seen are at least clean-lined and fairly classic designs, and her crafts while often too expensive or time consuming are just suggestions. If someone has the time, money and interest to follow her lead, they could do worse. Basically, I think she puts way too much time and effort into what can and should be simple and fun, whether it be cooking, decorating or gardening, leaving time for other things. jo

Well,,,,I must admit that I am quite impressed by Martha. See, we are on a first name basis now (grin). So, everything she does is not the most practical thing in the world and you'd either have to be a really bored housewife/hubby or a kept man to do everything in the magazine but she has class and lets people get a sense of pride in what they do. Maybe I do buy my towels at K-Mart and, maybe they are Martha Stewart 'Sage' but they are beautiful and inexpensive and make me feel darn good about myself. Now, exuse me while I go make my breakfast in a hand-fired skillet over a wood burning antique stove I found in a deserted shop in the Hamptons and refurbished with hand-mixed paint. GREAT GAL! What is so wrong with her?
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?

Why do people always think that just because one doesn't like Martha Stewart that somehow that person must resent or be jealous of Martha Stewart? I don't get it. Can't someone just dislike someone on general principles? I'd like to tell her to buy a comb and do something with her hair. Personally, I just can't stand her "trendier than thou" attitude. I was collecting Frankoma pottery long before it appeared in her magazine as the new, hip thing to collect, so I guess I'm trendier than Martha, but no one is writing about me and my personal style. My friends and I have been shabby chic for too many years than I care to count but no one's written a book about us. The only thing Martha has over me is more bucks, a bigger house, and a better PR machine.

I too think that Martha (I'm on a first name basis with her too!) is a "good thing." I was so excited to see her line of seeds at K-Mart. After seeing all these varieties that she grows in her gardens on her TV show, it was great to just pick them up in the store rather than sending away for them. All of her gardening products are excellent. I'm so excited that her gardening line has expanded this year and continually haunt my local K-Mart store waiting for a new shipment of goodies. Last weekend they received their first shipment of Martha's plants and they were sold out within minutes. But at least I got my first picks because I was the first one to discover these little treasures. And wouldn't you know with Martha's attention to detail even the plastic pots that the plants were in are unique and pretty. They have a basketweave-like pattern embossed on them. And not to fail to mention the wonderful products at Martha-by-Mail. I love all the kits that she has (i.e., cookie decorating, cake decorating, etc.) that come in their own metal containers that look great stacked and sitting on a shelf in the kitchen. As you can tell, I could just go on and on raving about Martha ....

She offers me a retreat every once in a while. I usually have cruddy clothes on, entertain on the fly, rarely do anything in elegant style so I escape for a while in her world. She is, first and foremost, a remarkably successful business woman and I love that. She has made giant sacrifices to be where she is (her choice, of course), is very driven and probably never satisfied with her accomplishments to date. I like that she sometimes doesn't comb her hair! She has made her loyal employees rich, given her family and many others a chance to shine on her show and can't see where she has purposely hurt anybody. I wish I lived next door to her - heck of a neighbor. Would always have the ingredient I am missing to make a simple raisin cake.

Personally I enjoy watching Martha's show when I have an opportunity to do so, and have been a subscriber of her magazine for quite some time. I love many of her ideas, have great respect for her expertise as a business person, a home maker, show producer or what ever. I have no idea why people react to her in the way they do, but if you want to really get some nasty flame letters, just say something nice about her on some of the sites, that will guarantee you a mailbox full of rude letters! When that happened to me the first time, I was amazed, the next time it happened, I quit going to that particular site altogether. I am a true Martha fan. jt
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?

I think that much of the resentment about Martha is just to follow the crowd and people are afraid to admit they don't dislike her. I was going along with the jokes until I realized that there isn't a single thing I don't like about her, but I'm not necessarily a fan either. I am just neutral and I was joining in on the jokes without having any idea about how I really feel. I think some of her ideas are a bit much and not realistic but that's no reason to like her. What I like most about her is her casual style, the jeans-and-tennies look. That's how I dress most of the time whether it's in "style" or not.
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
I usually crawl out of bed, pull on yesterdays jeans and maybe a clean T-shirt if making dinner last night got messy, slip into my garden clogs, brush my teeth, put my hair back into the bun that it slipped out of in the night (foregoing the brush of course), and then my girls and I go out into the yard and weed, trim, clip or do anything that might need us... I guess that's why I love Martha. I'm definitely not as skilled, crafty, organized or as RICH as Martha, but she's not out to impress by her outward physical appearances. Even when she has a HOT guy like The Rock on her show. She lets her ability speak louder than her appearance. ;) Happy planting to all Amy

It's easy to "joke" about ole Martha, because she's so commercial, but I'm for any of us females who make it out there in the big world and go crashing through the glass ceiling. Way to go, Martha!

| How can you not like someone who enjoys dogs, cats, chickens and gardens? |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?

| Isn't she a cartoon. REAL? I can't believe anyone could be so obsessed with the trivia of life. Don't forget to put yogurt on your flower pots to induce 'natural moss' to grow. The low point of materialistic Western civiliztion. |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?

| I personally think that MS is a very talented business woman. I admire a woman who takes a chance in life and makes it. She may be a little over the top but she is definitely making history... When was the last time that a decorator/designer was known by simply mentioning their first name? Whether you love or hate her, you know who she is. |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?

| Martha has made a fortune by telling people with no common sense how to do things that people with common sense know how to do.Also she has added some experts to help her along the way.I enjoy her show when I watch it,but do not take her magazine.Jessie |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?

| Too funny. This is too funny. Such easily conned victims of the television media. Martha Stewart is Madison Avenue marketing at its ultimate and you are all such chumps. 'Let's present an image of a real woman...everyone's friend...Sell a bunch of products..throw in some animals to show how nice she is... emphasize such skills as napkin folding and preserving peaches.' Get real people..and I bet you voted for Clinton and still think he was such a nice guy! |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?

| You know what? I think she has a menopause belly. She always wears tops that are not tucked inside her waistband. ROFL |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| Will she be coming out with different colored yogurts to created outside moss of matching colors to her napkin holders? All you chumps will relish in that. Martha Stewart represents pathetic materialism at its worse. Loves animals? Her obsessions are so removed from Nature that she has to control everything around her (to the design on the her shoelaces)...this is the opposite of living with Nature. She doesn't like animals..she likes their cute images and big eyes. |

I personally like Martha Stewart, she is smart to build such an incredible machine for herself! I also like her shows. That said, I DESPISE her magazine! It is over-priced and a waste of time and money. Plus, her hair is a disaster all the time...you would think someone with that kind of money could have nicer hair. And her clothes....she must have a closet full of that outfit, in all the "Martha Stewart" colours of the rainbow...lol Josie |

| In general, I don't like the things she does. But I admire her as a business woman. And that's the extent of my feelings about her. But it sure is funny reading about "Martha" on GardenWeb! :o) |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| We admire her as a 'businesswoman'...too bad our society has sunk so low into materialism that earning your money off others is seen as an asset. Where is altruism? Where is charity? The decline and fall of the American Empire? Maybe this is why I like Nature and gardening....it is Everything that Martha Stewart Can't control. It is REAL! |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| Martha is OK!! Yes, she is more organized, crafty and richer than I am, but then I'm not trying to impress or make money off of others. Her program has some handy tips and ideas. Now whether they are hers or not, I can't say, we are not that good of friends. So far, the majority of her products seems to be pretty good stuff. At least, they aren't so far out that most of us wouldn't or couldn't buy them from K-Mart or Sears. Now her web site is a different matter. It is so over priced that only the richest of us could afford it or would want too!! Otherwise, Martha's OK. |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| I to like MS. I don't find anything wrong with her. Folks just don't like someone that acts like they know it all. I think she knows that she doesn;t know it all but she's not going to tell us that. lol BUT I really do like her. I like all the projects and things she does. NO ONE could say she was a boring person that's for sure. hee hee |

RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| No your right. She isn't boring if you have no other value in life. Is your life that barren of reality? You MS worshippers are Pathetic!! Are you that removed from Nature? I agree with the comment a few above. She is everything Nature isn't. She is control of the world down to the last iota. Too bad we admire this type of activity and admire the virtues of concrete and plastic. MS is concrete and plastic. Don't let the fuzy animals fool you. Wouldn't want them to shed on her tablecloths or poop in her perfect garden. SAD. SAD. SAD. |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| Bottom line? Martha Stewart is the most pathetic extension of Western Civiliztion. Plastic. Plastic!! Above says it all! What is wrong with Nature. Why control the whole world down to our napkin holders. Are your lives so empty??!! |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?

PEOPLE! PEOPLE!!! Can't we all just get along!!??!! HEE!HEE!! We're all different. We all have to have money sometimes if for nothing else but the necessities, sure Martha has more than anyone could need, but still... give me a break. I have no opinion of her one way or the other. Generally, when one works for money, they are generally getting it from other people, and the other people are buying, so whats the big deal? Please don't anyone have a heart attack over this discussion, everyone is different, and we all have different opinions. Get over it! No need to get angry and call people names (chumps), if they like her or her products that doesn't mean they are chumps. That's who they are and they can choose who they like and what they do with their time and money. We are in America are we not? Anyway... |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| Actually no. Lots of us aren't Americans. |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| I'm not in America. either! 3000 miles away in England. You can keep Martha. As long as her next billion comes from gullible Yanks, I couldn't care less. Your PT Barnum said one was born every minute. |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| I've never been to America. Hope to go some day. Love Yanks. Definitely don't want to call on Miss Stewart. There may be some one handing her a bunch of flowers she grew 'all by herself' in her 'own' garden. She'll show us how to make paper cards from them, or maybe perfume or some other silliness 'all by herself'. What a fake! |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
She is agressive, assertive and a self made millionaire. Of course everyone hates her! No one else has ever taken 'womens work' and turned it into big bucks. Oddly enough, so many women are contemptious of her achievements. Speaks volumns, doesnt it? My husband was an investment broker, and he put alot of our money into Marthas' companies. Bless his heart. All did well. To whomever sneers at her achievements...I say., lets see you do better. |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| The funny thing about those who love or detest Martha Stewart is that she is really only repackaging things that have been done before. Am I the only one who had a grandmother who folded napkins, made jam, composted, baked cakes, collected china, kept chickens, etc? I jokingly tell people that Martha is really "Gourmet Granny". Of course, that in itself is kind of a funny statement. Many of the these things used to be considered a frugal way of saving money, and now people would probably consider them "gourmet" and "odd". Many of the things that Martha does are actually from earlier times, and I wonder if that isn't what people are actually rebelling against when they come out with the negative comments, and what those who admire her are endorsing. What do you think? |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| Sorry to have written 'aren't we all Americans?' when I posted it, it did dawn on me then, "no, we are not all". Anyway what I meant by that was we are supposed to be free to have our own opinion and that should be true no matter where you are. |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| Earlier time comments. These things were done for free or to save money. Not to make Martha another billion. She is the opposite of my Grandma's ethics. Grandma gave away pieces of apple pie to dollar-a-day workers. She was always knitting mittens to give to charity. No, I don't resent Martha, but I do resent those who find praise and admiration in one so selfish in her accumulation of wealth. My Grandma, with all her corny crafts, preserves, etc. would never have tasted a piece of her pie or put on a pair of mittens before everyone else was taken care of. Martha may revisit old crafts but she doesn't revisit old values. |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| I don't see why we have to choose sides to either love or hate Martha. We can always use what we want of the ideas she has and dismiss the others. Some of the simpler things she does with such good results (the poulet palais) are things I would really like to try. Many of the things she cooks are mouth watering, but some are so trendy I would never choose to try them (even if she made them for me). The ideas that fit our lifestyle and pocketbook are things that may enhance our life and the others we don't need to worry about. I took the magazine for several years(the early years when it made more sense) but the fancier things got, the less I used it. One thing I would always like to think that I do in similar fashion is "do what I do well". |

| Frankoma pottery still exists? (Obviously, I don't watch Martha.) When I was a kid growing up in Oklahoma I collected it. Toured the factory and used to try to form Oklahoma's red clay into dishes and pots on my own - fire them in Mom's oven (she didn't take that well). I've been away from Oklahoma for years, but still have some of my original pieces (40 years old by now). Loved the simplicity of the lines and the colors of the glazes. |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| Ok, I don't like Martha Stewart and I am not jealous of her. Why would I be? I know more about her than most people do, I have read several books about her and heard from people that have worked for her and I have to tell you; she's not the creative person you think she is. She stole almost every recipe from other cooks in all of her Cookbooks. She has stolen other people's ideas and gotten ghost writers to write every book she has out on the market and never credited them for their help. She has been sued countless times because her abuse of people that have worked for her and has even refused to pay people that work for her. A decent human being? I don't think so. Martha got her start by being a caterer and she would take food that was left over and people had paid for and use it the next day at another party. So, for instance if the party had only used 6 bottles of wine, she still charged for the whole case and then charged the next party with the same case so she got paid double for 1 case of wine. She did this her customers all the time. She even would take the wineglasses thatstill had wine left in them and had been drunk from and pour them back into bottles and re-sell them again. Martha would tell her help that the alcohol would kill the germs and it was ok for her to do that because all caterers did that. That's why you can't find people that would book her again!! Lots of the people in her books she didn't even do their weddings, she would read about it in the paper and go to the place where the wedding was held and take pictures and put them in the "Martha Stewert Wedding Book" as weddings she had done. She never gave credit to the real caterers or people that had worked for months on the Weddings and Receptions. She is an icon because her EX-Husband got her a contract to write her first book but her best friend who was a well known writer wrote it for her and she was never credited or paid for that help. If it wasnt' for her Ex-husband she would never be more than an average housewife. He made her what she is today and he left her because she was such a mean person to him. She slapped him and berated him at parties and treated him like a slave. It's really a shame that a person like Martha has such a big following but meet her in person when she is being herself and you won't think much of her. If her ideas and creativity were at least her own ideas I could at least think she was worthy of some praise but she stole all the ideas you see on her Specials and books. Her staff does a very good job on the magazine and she is surrounded by people who are creative but even they have leaked out how mean she really is. She has slapped many on her staff and they have sued her in court and been compensated for it. Who do I respect? I respect others who treat others well and don't steal their ideas from others. The information is out there if you really want to the know the truth about Martha Stewart. Honestly but what kind of person would do the things she has done? Bren |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?

| Seen her latest Kmart commercial? ...pushing M.S. toasters, etc. She plays an astronaut! What a heroine! Martha is a wonderful person, O.J. was innocent and Clinton is a shining example of morality. I'm embarassed by my fellow Americans at the icons we put on pedestals and worship. Humility and Charity... must be disgusting traits as we look for hero worship in those who represent the antithesis of those once cherished attributes. M.S.is the icon for your daughters? |

| Bjorna, Admiring someone's ability at making money does not necessitate under-appreciating altruism and charity. For one thing, it's pretty hard to give to charity (or to garden, for that matter) if you don't have any money. There is nothing intrinsically bad about money - it's what people do with it that matters. (And I for one have no idea what MS does with her money. Do you?) And don't think that just because I admire a rich businesswoman that I'm one myself - I'm a poor philosophy student. Zena. PS There are plenty of good things to be said for concrete and plastic. :o) |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?

This thread is hilarious! I think MS may be a very good businesswoman, and from much I have read, not a very good person. Most of her ideas are NOT original, and certainly not her own. If we all had three hundred people working for us, I am sure we could all come much closer to accomplishing what she claims to do in a day. Some of her decorating, easy projects ~ HA! Like I have a field of cedar trees to cut, and the porch and pillars and a roll of stucco wire stored in one of storage buildings…and seven staff to help put it up. Too foolish for words, in my opinion. I have seen her paint a beautiful oak table; made my skin crawl and she lessened the value of a beautiful antique piece and did nothing to improve the looks of it. My Great Aunt used to iron all her tea towels, sheets, etc. Why bother? There are too many important things going on. Like having a life. Alberta Rose |

| WOW have i enjoyed this thread. We don't have anything like that in Aus only common old gardening and lifestyle shows on the telly. Then again i turned the news on the other night and there was BILL CLINTON being paid $$$$$$$$ to come here and give a little talk on some subject or other (the mind boggles) at a dinner - nevertheless the wealthy people paid lots of $$$ and it went to the kiddies hospital which was great. As for MS i will have to go into her site and have a look - that is after i wash all the dirt off my hands from gardening all day. Regards to all as we head into our summer here (at last spring has arrived). |

| I used to like Martha, until her ideas got so darned expensive! Seems the more money she makes, the more expensive and extravagant her ideas get. I also heard about how she slapped people, and spending my time watching someone like that is just not worthy of me. If making money by being mean and a thief is admirable, then I'd rather be poor. Anyway, she was pushing "Native Florida Holly" as decoration on one of her shows, and the Parks department had a fit! They've been trying to get rid of that nasty Brazilian Pepper forever, and here she was, putting it in flower arrangements and calling it "native"! Someone didn't do their research well, or maybe one of her staffers just wanted to embarrass her a little - can't blame them. There are plenty of good ideas out there without having to watch or read about her. |

RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?

| Yawn, who's Martha Stewart? |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?

| I admit I watch her show now and then. She is talented in many areas, no doubt. But I also agree she advocates in her recipes and projects ingredients/items that are difficult to find and often expensive. I do believe she is a perfectionist which, as we know, is never completely satisfied. Perhaps that is why she is a good entrepreneur. Still, I think it's just that people feel perfectionists are tough on others (in addition to themselves) and therefore feel judged. But, I watch her and get ideas and most of them are good ones! :) |

| I have to say I get really annoyed when I hear, "I hate Martha." Do you know her personally? Most likely none of us do, but those of us who admire her are admiring what she AND A STAFF OF THOUSANDS have created. I'm intelligent enough to know that Martha herself does not do everything for her shows, magazines, website, and her numerous homes. What I truly believe about all the Martha bashers is this...CLASS ENVY. Ha! There, I said it, now you can bash me instead! |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| Yes, poor, poor Martha. All she did was work hard, berate those around her to become a success and succumb to a little insider trading to get even richer. Perhaps she can do a show and let us in on all her little secrets! |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| Yes Martha has good ideas. Yes her show can be interesting. But how can you respect a woman who has made it her lifes work to be the perfect domestic do it all and sacrificed her husband and children in the process? What kind of example is that for the rest of us really? Sacrifice everything for the eternal search of money and fame. Martha is not as perfect as she wants the world to think. I may not have perfectly folded napkins or make a souflee which doesn't fall but I do have a family to share things with when the day is done. There is more to life then money or being the perfect domestic goddess or businesswoman. Personally I feel sorry for Martha. |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?

What a fascinating debate. I cant decide where I stand on this issue. I like the idea of "dignity to the housewife" and in taking pride in little tasks. But honestly I couldnt be bothered to do much of the complicated/costly stuff she does. I guess I have this argument with myself a lot...what motivates us to do the Martha-like things we do? Is it to impress others? This is not too admirable a motivation. But I think we are all a bit guilty of this, like gardening to make the house look better . I cant believe people would criticise her hair...it is fine who cares. Does she represent indulgent wasteful materialism? I think of gardens and food and sewing when i think of her, not waste like throw-away fast food containers. On a positive note all her fortunes fuel the economy...it isnt just her making money. Anyone she features on the show/mag would benefit. Anyhow I am still not sure where I stand as I find myslef agreeing with posts from both sides. |

| I like Gothic Martha Stewart instead. I would not be caught dead in beige. I also like mAlice's Gothic Gardening (she has a web site) and pale pink is not my color. | I love the woman's show and magazine. She has some the greatest ideas and I for one appreciate her gift for making things beautiful and her creative ways. Yes, she comes off snooty sometimes, but, she has something to offer that I enjoy. She makes it look so easy, Julia Childs is also one of my favorites. Flo |

Now you guys have really got me curious. Not being American (yes, dear Martha does seem to have her frontiers!) I'm totally Martha-illiterate (the name's familiar, but that's about it). Could you point me to some web-sites where I can satisfy my curiosity (not just marthastewart.com, which no doubt exists, but some place where i could get an insight into this phenomenon)? |

| I heard an interior designer say that while she infringed upon their business, she was one of the first women to empower others to use simple items for decoration and to say "you can do it yourself." This encouraged production of items for the marketplace that could be purchased by the consumer and did not have to be sourced through a designer. She made it ok for our homes to look like an extention of ourselves and our families. It no longer had to look as though it was done by an interior decorator, and she taught us we could break the rules. For that reason alone I appreciate her efforts. |

| I love Martha because she has given so many of us so much information, and has make it "a good thing" to be a homekeeper (her term) again. For so many years there, if you were not in law school, or CEO of some company, you were considered by some to be, in Helen Gurley Brown's words, a "mouseburger" -- whatever the heck that means. I don't know about her temperament, which is reportedly *not* a good thing, or her finances. But I do appreciate her for what she has done for me in my home. |

| Don't hate her too much - she just named Gardenweb.com in her list of seed exchanges. It was in her column of the Star Magazine this past Sunday. I can imagine our exchanges boards will be lighting up big time after our name is seen by millions. |

| I also am not a MS fan. Several years ago our charity group in central California gave a lunch with her as a guest speaker in order to raise funds for local children. She insisted on so many things, first class airfare for her and a friend, First class hotel accomaditions. She only signed a limited number of books. Her talk was booring and just showed slides about her in the garden She then went around to all of the produce ranchers and wanted fresh produce sent to her home back east. It was to be free and sent air overnight. She invited some local decorators to attend, they never paid and we wrote to her to ask for the money---no response! After 2 days we were all so tired of her and she wanted a dinner to be held in her honor . We had trouble filling 3 tables and those that did attend would not sit at the table with her. My daughter and I finally did. She was nothing special and was not interested in us, only herself! Wall Street can have her, I refuse to buy any of her products just as she refused to pay for her table of friends at our charity fund raiser. |

| No, I am not. The best things about Martha Stewart: she showcases plants, gardens, gardeners, nurseries and garden writers. The worst thing about Marth Stewart: she makes everything look too perfect and projects it in a way as if her way is the only way. |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?

| I think she is great. I think making home pleasant and "ideal" is a good thing. I think anyone watching any how-to show must know that behind the scenes there is a crew doing a lot of work. Why would it be any different for her show -- DUH? |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| I don't really care one way or the other. She is a celebrity and if she has something useful to say, I will listen. Unfortunately her life has come under a microscope and a black cloud has been cast over her. Nevertheless, she (or her team) does have some great gardening tips and products and if they benefit me and my gardening efforts I will use them. I try not to get caught up in all of the hoopla surrounding her. |

| Resent her ... how can I(or rather, how can't I?)? She's the creation and mirror of my generation. The female baby-boomer deluxe. She stands for an archetype we never saw in the 50s and 60s -- the competent, able, smart, independent woman mixed in with some earth mother country dwelling hippie do it yourselfer then flavored up with a dose of yuppie, class-obssesed, get out of my way, business shark. Frankly I love her for her competence, her hips, her hair but mostly of all for her magnificent "I can do anything if I set my mind to it, just give me the information" attitude. Ah yes, just like so many of us, even the less perfectionsitic ones. Shes the goddess of the home, the hearth and the boardroom. If she only had a heart(or let it show or pretended to have one) she'd be truelly perfect. Till then, she's flawed enough to make a much more than adequate celebrity Springcherry, a darn competent woman herself |

| Really funny story, which I overheard. A foursome was at the table next to ours (dinner at at inn on the Delaware, in Bucks County), and one of the guys told the following. (I'm paraphrasing a bit, because I don't recall word for word precisley, but I've got a good memory, and this is pretty darn close.) Oh yes, and the reason he knew this was because he knew the store owner--read on. There's apparently one general store on Mount Desert Island, Maine. Martha marches up to the counter and demands to use the store owner's phone, immediately. Store owner, "You can't use the phone in here, but there's a pay phone outside." Martha again demands to use store owner's phone, saying, "Do you know who I am?" Store owner, "Yes, I know who you are. If you want to use a phone, there's a pay phone outside." At which point, the man standing in line behind Martha taps her on the shoulder and says, "Do you know who I am?" Martha, "I haven't the faintest idea who you are." Imagine a snotty tone of voice. Man behind Martha, "I'm David Rockefeller. Now, here's a quarter; the pay phone's outside." From what I've read, that's vintage Martha. Apparently the world revolves around her, or at least it should. |

I know this is an old thread - but I've just come across it and wanted to get my two cents in. I admire Martha and love her shows. Materialistic? What? Is that what you call people who work hard and succeed? That kind of work ethic used to be admired! As far as "not liking animals", mary3, I can tell you that she certainly does love animals and animals love her. One day she happened to have been shooting something for her show in our neighborhood. She was just leaving as I was returning home with my dog. My dog is a 120lb German Shepard - most people are intimidated by her appearance. Martha caught a glimpse of my dog, got out of the car and walked nearly a block over to pet her. I know a dog lover when I see one - so does my dog. Martha didn't hesitate for a second to hug and hold my huge dog. She never said who she was - wasn't "throwing her name around"; she talked about how she was missing her dogs, and she was very gracious. As she walked away, my dog whined for her to come back - and she did. Gave the dog one last pet and left. She laughed when I pointed out that she was covered in dog hairs - said she is "used to it". Seemed like a thoroughly decent person to me. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why people want to hate this person who has done nothing to harm them. P.S. who wants to bet that bjorna3,atrypa3,and gordia3 are all the same person - and a person with a huge chip on his/her shoulder, at that? |

Resentful of Martha? Not really!Well maybewhen she suggests using some exotic ingredient or tool,I could never afford. The person who said she's only doing what our grandmothers did was partly right.Making a home for our family is probally the most rewarding job there is.I have a job outside the home, bake my own bread, make homemade soups from scratch.Cook dinner from scratch almost every evening, sew and knit things for my grandchildren and have a garden that is the envy of all my friends. My daughter is a mirror of myself. We both had four children, are happily married(39 years for me and my fantastic husband)PS we also have six cats and dogs between us.My daughter was up at dawn this morning making a dress to wear for her college graduation on tuesday.( she returned to school at age 38) I guess what i'm trying to say is that Martha can't do anything the rest of us can't.We just have to get our priorites straight.Just do what makes YOU happy.spend less time in front of the TV watching someone else.tell you how to do things and get out and do them. |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| Well I ran across this old thread while dealing with the 5th straight day of rain here in good ol Maryland. Poor Martha! That's my statement when ever I hear her name come up in any conversation. It's a statement that has gotten much attention from most of my male friends, and quickly gotten attention from my female friends. For numerous years, I have stated that if poor Martha was a male, she wouldn't get the bad rap she get's. Forget everything else about her for a moment, likes or dislikes rights or wrongs are not the issue here. If she were a male, people would not think the same of her. Well guess what. The recent tv show about her (and the review in the Washington Post) made the very same statement. I see her situation as very clear cut. First. There are a lot of females out there who are threatened by her. No one can argue (even if you hate her guts) that she is very good at what she does, and she has been very successful at it. The majority of women who hate her, simply can't do what she does. They might make an attempt at it, but they just can't do it. These women are very busy trying to run a house, and their situation makes it impossible for them to tie ribbons around a sheet before putting it on the neatly lined shelf. IF however, you are a very successful woman, you can see where she is comming from, and you know instantly that she has her issues to deal with, just because she is a woman. Second. Most "successful" men loath her. It's a male thing. I'm sure you have heard the statement that "all men are pigs but we still like to eat bacon". Well, this really hits the nail on the head. Most successful males can't stand the thought of a woman being more successful than they are. It's a threat that out threats anything males can think of. If you are an unsuccessful male, you could eat her bacon raw. Unsuccessful males see her as this person who has become a tycoon making flower pots out of cement. So poor Martha get's a double wammy from males. So, I do get into lot's of conversations with both my male an female friends about poor Martha. It's always interesting to see reactions from people. If they are successful at what they do, and are comfortable with it, they usually don't have an issue. BUT if they don't take comfort in their situation as it it, they usually hate her. Mike |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| Well Mike, it's raining here now, so are you open to an opposite opinion? Regardless of business venture and male v. female, this woman certainly does not practice what she preaches. She has gardeners, cooks, decorators and craftspeople on staff whose only job it is is to make her look good. Now, personally, ,I don't have a problem with that at all, it's marketing and pr and that's how her business runs. It's simple why people despise her...it's because she's a fake...she does not live the life she portrays, it's all "put on" and she expects us to believe that's how she lives. She is, I think, basically a mean spirited self loving person. So is Donald Trump, but that's a different thread! ha ha. Do you know she took her gardener at Turkey Hill to court. He was suing her for unpaid overtime, approxm $50,000 as I recall and she had her lawyerswork overtime finding a loophole that said since Turkey Hill is in a farming zone, technically the gardener was a farmer and farmers do not get paid overtime. The poor gardener was out his overtime, not to mention the legal fees he had to pay and the kicker? She paid her legal team probably twice as much as she owed the poor gardener. She just had to win! She comes across as judgmental and a "Jones" person. I can't say I either like her or not, but I do like the ideas her staff comes up with...I'm their fan, not hers. |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| I think she is a marketing genius; and I do like some of her craft ideas, though they tend to be on the expensive side. I do believe sheer greed has got the best of her re the stock mess, I don't think it was a simple misunderstanding. What I wouldn't give for that Turkey Hill garden though! |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| ok - i have to add a bit of my 2 cents here as well - like her/hate her it's your choice - but calling people that like her "chumps" is silly. you don't HAVE to be on either side of this fence if you don't want to be but insulting the other people isn't necessary either........ and as for clinton - yes he was a louse, yes he did a lot of un-moral things in office but the budget was balanced by the time he left office. where are we now? in the worst budget crisis of our nations history in less than a full presidental term. i'm with mike on this martha thing - if she was a man she'd be called a genius - since she's a woman she's not, she is bashed and belittled. oh well - i watch her, i may get a few tidbits of info from her everynow and then, but i don't make recycling bins that need to be stained and i don't tie little ribbons around my sheets. and besides - there is nothing better to watch on tv - jerry springer is still on the other channels and we could probably start a WHOLE new thread on him! :) Friz |

Who on TV doesn't have writers or staff who come up with the next week show ideas? What famous person is always friendly and out going to every person they run into? I have never seen a MS show which tells everyone they must do their garden, house color or cook anything a certain way.Lighten up you guys, they are only ideas, some will like them some won't. Nobody is told they won't be acceptable if they don't do what is shown on a show. As far as making coments about her hair? Whats up with that? She has nice hair. I would like to know what those who commented on it think it should look like? Should it be permed, ratted, hair sprayed? As far as the comment about her weight and tummy size? I would love to see a photo of you, that is if your her age and not 28. Jezze she looks better than 75% of females her age. American or not. As far as Americans being materialistic......Give me a break. Most humans are. Don't tell me because your not an American you are not. There are Americans who are and American who are not. The only diffence between Americans and non Americans is it is easier to become succesful in the US than most places if you put your mind into making money. The comment about how she gave up her family for money and fame? I would love to know how you know what caused her divorice? Maybe you were watching one of those Movies made for TV. They are certinally full of facts. I also am amazed how so many know she really doesn't like animals?? How? The way I see it,so much of the public reacts to her same as so many react to Bill Gates.None of these people really know either of them. Base their opinons on rumors and continue t spread the nonsense around. For example Bill Gates was quoted in a magazine saying there is no scientific proof of the human soul.OH boy sent people over the edge. He must be a evil devil person. In real life he wasn't saying he didn't believe in the human soul(and big deal if he did) he was just stating that there is no scientific proof of it.If anyone out there know different I would love to know the facts.I myself strongly believe that human and animals have souls but I sure don't have any science to back it up. I guess I am just amazed what examples so many folks use for HATING MS. Heck I wish I had her chicken coop, her gardens, even one of her homes and of course I would need and want a crew to help mantain them. Who could do it all by themselves? Life is too short to HATE MS. Just change the channel if you are so offended by someone who doesn't have to work 9 to 5. Just my 2 cents |

| Kate1 thanks for saying what I wanted to say and saying it so well. I love to watch Martha Stewart. I love all the segments and the show is photographed so lovely. Another thought about all the those who call her fake and complain about a staff of people doing the work. I guess all the chefs on FoodTV are doing all the chopping and prep work. I guess they are going to Williams and Sonoma and picking out the tools, linens and flowers. I guess Bob Villa is doing all the work on the houses and all the HGTV hosts are doing all the remodeling themselves. Get Real! Faye |

RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| Several years ago I heard someone say: "I hate Martha Stewart." When I asked why, she replied that it was because she had muddled speech. There are a lot of negative things said of Martha which may have some validity, but her speech is something you cannnot criticize. It is loud, clear, and well articulated. Being a fan, I became curious as to the real reason people resented Martha. I conceived a hypothesis, and developed a short survey to test it out. I administered the survey to dozens of professional women, a few men, and a number of Smith College graduate students. I simply asked if they liked or disliked Martha Stewart, and why. My hypothesis was that aging successful women are resented by many, and that Martha Stewart epitomized that group. I judged the responses by what I felt to be the validity of the replies (very unscientific). The woman who said that Martha's speech was muddled clearly didn't like her for other reasons. Begonia scorns her because she has a "menopause belly." Some who didn't like her didn't even know who she was, they just didn't like her. One of the most interesting things to come out of the survey was the discourse. Like her or not, everyone seemed to have a strong opinion, and this was long prior to the recent scandal. Why do I like her? I admire strong, intelligent, interesting or unusual people of any age. I admire Martha's tenacity and success, and don't look for and dissect her shortcomings. I generally don't have the opportunity to watch her TV show, but when I do, I am amazed at the number of diverse and useful things I learn in areas like carpentry, pet care, and cooking. A regular viewer can get an incredible and useful education. Some of the Smith College graduate students, and many of the professional women I interviewed taped the show so as not to miss anything. Another reason for liking Martha is her interest in people who practice unusual crafts and skills. She not only provides a forum for viewers to learn about these interesting and unusual experts and their crafts, but each person she features is treated as very special, and allowed to showcase their expertise. I suggest re-reading some of the above entries in light of my hypothesis... |
A Martha Fan

| The above post is very well written and I am also a fan. I love the attention to detail and the variety of subjects that she covers. Some favorite episodes have been when she brought in experts or visited experts on such subjects as vintage floorcoving, vintage frames, bread artisans, heirloom seedsavers, and orchid growers. Have you noticed that in Wal-Mart in the kitchen aisle, that the merchandise is a look-alike of the MSL brand? Faye |

| Martha's tops in my book. She has put homemaking right up there with so-called professional occupations, while proving all the while that she is a capable of creating and running a business. I appreciate Martha and what she has done for all women. |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?

| I agree. That's one of the things that I appreciate about her, the fact that she values the everyday things. Home and family is the most important thing that we have. They should be valued and are worthy of time and trouble. Faye |

| Note to bjorna 3: I don't think our society "has sunk so low into materialism that earning your money off others" is a negative thing. That is the way our free enterprise system works. Martha Stewart has provided jobs to more than 500 people. Her TV show, which has given a wealth of information to all of us, is free. Yes, she has made money because she is great at marketing. But then, so has Bill Gates, who has given all of us this great communication tool. |
RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?

| While reading the local paper here on Mount Desert Island, I saw where Martha Stewart had recently donated $5,000 to the community, I believe to help out the Northeast Library...the next little town over from where Martha has a summer home here. Never met her though, I have spoken to her gardeners, a few house keepers and personal staff members...some like her alot, others have issues about her. Iam glad there is a Martha Stewart out there, I hope someday to meet her! |

RE: Resentful of Martha Stewart?
| | |
| I am always amazed at the strong reactions of people who say they don't like Martha. I have to agree with previous posts, that I don't think these people have actually seen her show or read her magazine, because many of the reasons they give for disliking her are simply not true. For those of you, I'll tell you a little about her show. On her show she features guests as well as her own experts (employees), who show HER and her audience how to. That is what she is about - if you WANT to, you can do it yourself. You don't need to eat at a 5 star restaurant, you can have the 5 star chef show you how to do it at home. That is why she has guests do something they have never done before, or are not necessarily comfortable doing. To show that you can do it, and do not need to feel intimidated. Her show/magazine also features EXPERTS in their field give advice on health, gardening, taking care of your pets. Great tips, practical tips, inexpensive and expensive tips. Why is this so offensive, I'll never know. Obviously, if you aren't interested, then don't watch it/read it! I don't need to think she is the most personable woman in the world to like what she does. And who cares what she does with her money? Calling her materialistic is ridiculous. What about the billionaires who spend their money on solid gold faucets and million dollar parties? She is frugal by comparison and created a center devoted to geriatrics. If you ask me, she can spend her money as frivolously as she wants, she made it, what she does with it is none of my business, besides, I don't care, I have better things to get angry about. I'll save my anger for violent criminals, animal abusers, child abusers. As for her being a poor example for our daughters, I can think of worse, namely the Paris Hiltons and Lindsey Lohans of the world. I believe those who dislike her are INSECURE. They somehow believe that others feel they should "be like Martha". I don't feel I should to be like Martha, but I sure have gotten some amazing recipes from her website. I have a blackberry mint julep recipe that is out of this world. And shame on you for your rude remarks about her hair, my 6 year old knows better. |
