Cut main stem of new fig?

After last winter, my 3 year old fig tree initially did not return. It' was a brutal winter in Maryland and I assumed it died. Months later, a sprout shot out from the base of the dead tree! It is now a year later, and I've since potted the plant and brought it in my home. That sprout is about a 5 foot tall "branch" now with big leaves at the top.

The original tree had a main trunk and split off into 3 branches at about 2 feet from the ground. I liked that.

If I want my new tree to branch out at 2 feet, do I simply cut the existing new "branch" down? Will this kill it?
