Need coaching on fig cutting

I need a little coaching on rooting fig cuttings. How long can they stay out before you wrap them in newspaper or plant them in starter soil? I recently took some cuttings, but they were left out in my kitchen for a good two weeks before I touched them. I've got some wrapped in newspaper and some in starter pots now (I'm hedging my bets). Have I ruined my chances to make them root?

Back story: My husband's grandmother passed away, and he really wanted to try to root some cuttings from her fig tree. We didn't have a lot of time to research, and had to shoot from the hip. Between getting her house cleaned out and the holidays, the cuttings were just forgotten.
