I don't see a problem planting it. Full sun is definitely needed for good fruit production. I'm sure it will be fine if planted out. It will eventually grow.

I would plant it now. Make sure to keep the ground "always" moist (not soggy wet) for at least the first two years after planting a fig tree in the ground. NEVER EVER let the ground beneath it get bone dry during the first two years or you will kill feeder roots which are just below the surface. Keeping the ground moist is very very important in order for the tree to quickly develop a proper root system. Your tree will grow much faster and produce figs much earlier by keeping the ground "always" moist after planting it in the ground......mulching & a little fertilizer helps.

in my opinion you received good advice.
The panache plant produce wonderful looking figs if you never saw one in person.

They sure are pretty figs. I had a few Panachees on my tree this year that I showed to my two young fig trainees (my grandson and his friend). Those figs look like little painted hot air balloons. Soon after showing them those figs......they disappeared right off the tree. My guess is those two fig trainees took them to show their pals. They were not ripe and there was no trace of them on the ground. But, that's OK if that is what keeps their interest in figs. I've given both boys permission to pick any figs that they want from my trees. I'm hoping to eventually turn both of them into fignuts. It is a pleasure watching them race to the trees to find any that are ripe.
