Nj Fig Cutting

Hello guys and gals! I live in N.J. and just took some cuttings off of a friends fig tree. I don't have a clue what variety it is, however, I do know that it has remained uncovered during the past three winters and produces like crazy during summer. The cuttings I took were about 8 in. long and I have a few wrapped in moist papertowls in plastic bags in a warm area. I have a few others that I put in a tupperware container in damp sphagnum moss. My questions are .......
Did I cut at the right time of year?
Will the methods I'm using actually work?
And finally, If I have any sucess in getting some to root, could I put it into some gritty mix under lights till I can harden off and plant outside in late spring? This is my first attempt to grow a fig tree, so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Chad
