Bag the roots, and put something (paper, or ?) damp in with the roots. Beware of freezng weather.

Bare root the tree.

Wrap the roots tightly with damp paper towel or newspaper.

Then, wrap with foil or seal in a plastic grocery bag to prevent moisture loss.

When you seal the plastic bag or crimp the foil around the trunk, make sure none of the paper is sticking out of the top. I've stored trees like this in my fridge for as long as two months.

Jon, James, thanks for the step by step instructions. Very nice pictures by the way. Freezing is definitely an issue. Rooted cuttings are going to upstate NY. I'll fill the box with packaging foam or shredded paper.
